but how could we have rodri and say declan rice where one is a sub for weeks on end if and when the big games come around? I personally think Phillips for £35m would be an extremely astute and underrated signing that improves the squad depth and quality in a key area. Pep and Txiki have rumoured to have been watching him the last 12-18 months and rate him highly so its not like they are doing it to just add a body?
Yes I think all that is true it’s just that we normally buy a rival not a back up. No player at City plays all the time. Rodri and Rice could get 30 games each. They give up game time to win trophies that’s the deal. Accept rotation whoever you are.

i think in a better team with a better manager Phillips could turn out to be an outstanding signing for £35m

Yes maybe and £35 million would be a good deal.

I thought the release clause was 25 and only if Leeds were relegated. I’m sure I’ve missed something…..

This is going to get ugly...

Leeds fans adamant there is no clause and that he’s going to cost 50 million plus.. same situation with Grealish last summer just less money

It’s often been said but City love a release clause.

If 35 is true there will be a few takers though none to concern us.

I think Phillips is better than you give him credit for. Obviously these things are difficult to predict in terms of how a player adapts and how they improve. But the key thing for me is that he played in a positional system as a lone pivot and in a team that in many respects were even more 'adventurous' in their attacking, and therefore even more exposed at times defensively.

Rice is an absolute non-starter. The fee alone makes it just a pointless conversation. The Tchouameni hype train is also a non starter. They're talking about 80 million euros. That's not something I would ever see City doing for a kid with a couple of seasons of football under his belt. I agree that City tend to buy competition, and not back ups. But I also think that rotation is part of the game when you play as many games as we do.

Phillips for me would be more like Foden, Grealish, Sterling, Mahrez in that either him or Rodri could be picked and there'd be little argument in the selections as both of them would be more than capable of performing in 90% of the games we have every season.

Yes I don’t dislike him. Pep likes to keep a squad low in numbers and high in quality and gives everyone plenty of games to keep them happy so in that sense there are better alternatives to Calvin If we are willing to pay more.

From a monetary point of view £35 million would be a great deal. However the only release clause I can find anywhere is £25 million if Leeds go down which makes me think that ship has sailed and Leeds would want £80 million or some daft figure which City wouldn’t spend.

I think Tchoumeni has gone to RM now and I would absolutely have bought him. Some kids are worth it.

I believe you…everyone would come here now. It’s just there is a chance the clause has gone now they have stayed up in which case Leeds could ask for silly money?
I posed about this above. I don't know for definite but last week I was told this was happening but at the time Leeds looked dead and buried.
