Kalvin Phillips | Joins City on a 6-year deal

I remember Gerard Houllier saying that he only ever looked at a player's strengths because that was what they would bring the team. I always admired that view.

very true mate and it seems pep and txiki have been keeping an eye on phillips over the last year or two?

I don’t think he will say he will leave when your team is fighting in the relegation battle

However I do think it is the last chance for getting a big contract as he will turn 27 this year. It’s quite like Jack Grealish situation. He will sign a deal with Leeds if he cannot move to city. But I think this deal is gonna be harder than Jack’s one because Kalvin definitely doesn’t mind to stay Leeds forever.
I don't doubt you are a pull for him with your money and trophy aspirations.

But he is a very different character to Grealish who always had a selfish streak (can see that with how he acts off the pitch).

So Grealish, Mr Arrogant leaving his boyhood club for you wasn't that much of a shock to me.

Kalvin is a far more grounded lad I'd say and I do think that will make any deal far more difficult.

The bit in bold is interesting.

It's eerily similar to the Grealish stuff last Summer - Villa saying there wasn't a release clause (to the point of not even telling City apparently!!) - and certain journalists being adamant there was which turned out to be true.

I'm sure it was a 'Champions League club' release clause too which is probably more popular than we realise. If it's the same for Phillips then that would explain being able to turn down the massive West Ham bid from January too.

We'll see what happens. I can't see us spending £60m for Phillips given he wouldn't be an automatic starter in the team and that, believe it or not, is a lot of money to City given it'd put him in the top 5 most expensive players in our history.

It'll be interesting to see. If there's a release clause and it's as low as being leaked then we love a release clause and it's a bargain. If not, it won't happen...IMO.
It's possible he will have a secret clause but Kalvin signed his last deal when we were in the Championship.

Is a Champions League clause likely to come up for a Championship player?

Grealish had one and it was ludicrous so I would hope if we did have one put in then it would be equally so.

Can't help but feel if a particularly low release clause exists like the £20-35mil one suggested on here then someone would have activated it by now?

I am confident the above is unlikely.

A secret one? Unlikely also I'd say as he was still only a Championship player at the time of signing.

We will see.

I am hopeful though we would make you or anyone else pay through the nose for KP though.

We made Villa pay pushing £30mil 3 years ago when we were still a Championship club (and KP rejected them) so I'd suspect you'd need to double it now.

Maybe they have?

If we rejected an offer of atleast £50mil of West Ham which is a fact unless porkies are being told which is unlikely given its his actual genuine agent at the time then its illogical we would accept less of you surely?

Even if Kalvin was desperate to leave the club will always look after themselves first I'd imagine.
These bids you are mentioning aren't during this window nor is it from club in the Champions league which makes a big difference if there is a clause like Jacks.

Calling Grealish "Mr.Arrogant" is very odd really especially if you are calling Phillips humble or "one club man" or a Leeds fan, cuz all of those things Jack were before moving, haha!

Again, you cannot push a fee if there is a clause which is what all these fees are based on. And if there werent a clause or a lower fee than 50m, why are City still in it. IF the fee is that high City would've move on by now, as they have in the past.

Grealish was arrogant lol.

Even Villa fans said as much.

An arrogant party boy who was often on the back pages for the wrong reasons.

Selfishly doing things that were embarrassing for his boyhood club for years.

That is what I meant.

Phillips isn't like that, never had any headlines like that.

That is what I meant by different characters.

Doesn't make Jack a bad person just means that maybe he makes decisions a little differently.

I just don't see a Championship player contract having some sort of Champions League clause in it.

No evidence of that ever happening before.

Kalvin has yet to sign a Premier League contract so things that are in them are unlikely to be in his current one.

Why are City still interested? Maybe Pep feels KP is worth more than £50mil?

He felt Grealish was worth £100mil which was ludicrous.

So it isn't that you don't ever overpay, that shows you absolutely do.

You spent £40mil on Nathan Ake, you think Kalvin is worth less than Ake?

Or all those years ago you spent £38mil on a 28 year old Fernandinho who had only played in the relatively weak Ukraine league domestically with only a handful of caps for Brazil.

Turned out for be a great player but why would 9 years later an English international and player of the year cost less when we know the domestic market is inflated and players cost far more now?

If the City decision makers thought Fernandinho was worth £38mil all those years ago and Ake was worth £40mil few years back I'd be shocked if they felt they could get Phillips for less.

We shall see soon I suppose regarding everything.

Is this going to be one of those drawn out will he won’t he numbers… I just want us done in the market as soon as possible. I know greedy.. and some deals take longer than others, & even some players no one was expecting suddenly becomes available. Still I would rather everyone in for preseason.
