Kalvin Phillips | Joins City on a 6-year deal

Does it matter? Not much to talk about apart from transfers and if being honest is probably the most exciting time for United fans over the past few years. I don’t rate Phillips and said when the news of City’s interest broke that I hoped it was true as he was being strongly tipped for a move to United.
He'd improve your lot.

I imagine most City fans have seen Phillips when

A: Leeds play City or a rival to City, so a game we’re expected to look shit

B: Under Southgate with England

I don’t think either show Phillips at his best.
I watched Leeds a lot this season and season before. Phillips is a great player. A game that springs to mind is away at spurs this season.

Well it does, its common sense. If a player doesn't have competition and is always going to be a starter why does he have to improve?

If Rodri knows he's starting regardless as there is no one in the team that can push him in that position why would he want to push himself to improve his game and improve himself as player.

You bring in a player in the same position that can play that position to a level. Phillips coming in no matter how good he is if Rodri starts under performing Pep will bench him now with Phillips as another option.

Then if Phillips comes into that spot and performs well then Rodri has to improve more to take that spot back.

Which improves both players. As they will be battling for that starting position.

Same with Left back. Cancelo is brilliant but if you bring in a left footed left back who's at a decent level Cancelo will have one eye on the bench as if he doesn't perform the new left back is there to take his place.

Competition improves players Kalvin and Rodri will improve each other competing against each other

Mad that that’s needed explaining.

There's some proper embarrassing pap in this thread. I can understand people not rating a player, but the relentless nature of a small minority means it is almost unreadable.

Basically if you feel the need to repeat every four hours "he's fucking shite, I hate him, he's average, he's not good enough", that adds nothing whatsoever to the forum and is a total waste of bandwidth. Still, each to their own.

The compulsion to write denigrating comments is not just a football thing. I’m sick of turning to the comments section of online news and seeing the same things written over and over. It seems Boris and Brexit are at fault for all the evils of the world. Whilst I was a strong remainer and have a low opinion of the current government, this obsession is preventing rational debate imo.

The reality is the vast vast majority of people who don't want him have no idea why the club want him. And more worryingly, have made no effort to think about it beyond crude reasoning like nationality and cover.

I used to ask people who didn't like Rodri why Pep was so insistent on playing him if he was so bad. And not one of them would ever give me a legit answer. They'd always refuse to give Pep any credit and act like Rodri had zero redeeming qualities outside of being Spanish and expensive.

We're seeing the same with Phillips. The guy has been scouted all season and is personally wanted by Pep. But no-one is willing to make the concession that these football experts might have a reason for wanting him. They refuse to see it. How can people be so convinced City are wrong if they have no idea what the logic behind the move is?

The people who think the only reason we might be interested is due to Phillips' nationality are doing a huge discredit to the club.
I think that's unfair. Like I said, they might have very good reasons in their eyes to sign Phillips and they certainly have a proven track record, but you're trying to reverse engineer why Phillips is a good player instead of the other way around, and that concerns me.

People here can't describe why Phillips would be a good signing and why the club should sign him, and instead go the other way and say that the fact that the club wants him IS the reason why he's good and should be signed. That type of circular logic is unconvincing.

Was definitely better last season when the team as a whole was better.

That's a bit of a strawman that. Which kind of proves my point.

I mean, yeah, but it's just the other side of the coin, isn't it? People keep posting the same relentlessly positive comments about him and shooting down people who disagree. Does that add anything to the discussion? Then it turns into an utter bitch fest.

I get that people like yourself think highly of him and I get why people want our transfer targets to be talked about in glowing terms but I feel like it just gets a bit needlessly tribal.

Context is important. 4 out of the last 5 titles. Best manager in the world. A squad littered with talent. I get that it would be 'boring' if everyone just patted City on the back for everything they do, but we live in a world where the club is repetitively and constantly belittled by those on the outside.

I think it is far more normal and acceptable within that context, for City supporters on a City forum to be slightly over defensive of a potential new signing or even City players who are currently in the squad. Or in fact, defensive about anything City related.

Most of us would just like the club to get credit where it's due. For example, in the transfer market. We're supporters, we're not meant to be dispassionate journalists 'analysing' every cough and spit to accentuate the negatives and ignore the positives.

You have a good day too! I have to turn my internet off to stop being distracted by the City chat!

i dont think we do the whole official bid until everything is sorted and then we know what leeds wnat do we? I think things have changed from the good old days where you just bid for a player and kept bidding until it got too high or you came to an agreement?

All fair points and ones I agree with, on the whole, even if I feel like there's a balance to be found.
