Kalvin Phillips

“I really can’t be bothered today . . . just the same thing. Go in, train, go home and not have anything to be excited for. It was stressful.”

“After the World Cup was probably the toughest, when Pep came out and said I was overweight. He was right to do so but there are different ways to go about it"

“Pep was frustrated I didn’t come back into training early but it was just a miscommunication between the people at City and myself.

“Pep wanted me to come in the day after we finished the tournament and be involved in friendlies and stuff. I never got that information because if he asked me to be there, I would have.

“It was just a misunderstanding, he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my target weight.

“It took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. My family were not happy about it, either. Especially Mum.”

Fuck sake thats pathetic. For an elite sportsman, just jeez. I'll put good money now he will be back at the end of the season. Maybe he'll bring his Mum to sort Pep out.

The interview will do him no favours, he comes across as a total idiot and not an elite footballer in anyway, I also hope any of his fanboys on here can now stop the sympathy they have for him during his time with us, the guy is way off our level in every conceivable way.
But he enjoyed our parties and nobody can take away his titles.
Speechless.
Our transfer targets are normally good. This one was a big mistake.

It’s strange, the attitude he’s had (not confident, self pity, not his own fault) is everything I thought he wouldn’t be.

I thought he’d be a strong character, young lad from Leeds who was the rock of their midfield and also England’s all of a sudden turned to a deer in headlights when he joined and seems to be blaming everybody but himself.

The writing was on the wall after that early interview he did saying he’s relying on his second season being good because that’s ‘what usually happens under Pep’…’look at Jack’. Couldn’t believe it when he said that.

I wanted him to do well but all this coming across like he’s been saved from a City nightmare is laughable really considering he refused to leave in the Summer.

He’s lucky Southgate picks his favourites or waiting until January to move could’ve been detrimental to his Euros hopes.
What are the chances he has the same as Navas had- homesickness

A couple things annoy me about this. You were at a tournament, all you have to do there is keep fit and try to fight for a place in that team. He didn't even play as far as i can remember but he would (should) have been training the whole time. No excuse to be over the weight the team at City have you given you, 1.5kg proves you haven't been monitoring your weight.

He mentioned there was a miscommunication and he didn't know he should be back straight away. Ok fair enough BUT, you have played fuck all football and not been able to show anything even in that tournament to get you in City's team. You know that Rodri has played loads for Spain, there is an opportunity for you there to come back and fight for that spot and maybe gain some favour. Considering he wasn't playing for England and said he genuinely wanted to fight for his city spot, surely you yourself would want to get back immediately?

It all sounds like he's sorry for himself, a lot of this is down to bad timing and luck but imo most of it he can't blame anyone but himself. I can 100% understand going to training and not playing and being frustrated at that, but someone who really wants to prove himself would be using it as fuel. He gave up, he's basically admitted it and you can see what it's done to him as a player now. On the pitch hes been fucking useless, watching him at West Ham for those couple games hes a complete liability, if you cant be fucked to even give the [delph]BASICS[/delph] and run, give some effort on the pitch, then just pack your bags.

The World Cup and the break in the PL gave him the perfect opportunity to get fit and try to break into the side.

He had a week between England getting knocked out of the WC and the friendly with Girona, and then a further five days before the game against the Dippers. He could have come back fit from the WC, had a few days solid training before Girona and then taken it from there.

To instead come back at the latest possible time, and be overweight when he did finally roll up, suggests he simply didn’t want to give it a proper crack.

Hart springs to mind with what I've highlighted in your comment the shit Hart got for a few years was a disgrace, Paul Robinson was also ruined by the bastards in the media scrutinising absolutely everything, David James at the dippers before him too when it comes to English keepers, he was slaughtered the most it's a miracle he came back from it at all.

What annoyed me with all the attention towards Hart's heavily scrutinised errors, is Hugo Lloris was making shitloads of mistakes his weren't being reported on because he wasn't English it's similar to the grief Sterling got.

The media in this country love trying to ruin England's most talented players they're total pricks, their latest victim is Kalvin Phillips they can't wait to grind people down in to the dirt in my view it's mostly the media who get to players, they ruin them and there are other factors but the grief they get off the tabloids is like the final nail in the coffin.

When the media start talking about these players they can't avoid it as it literally becomes public discussion, if they don't have thick enough skin or the hate gets too much it can easily make the best talents crumble.

I hope for Phillips sake he can proves them wrong before the end of this season, if not he'll be stuck in a rock and a hard place and we might end up stuck with loaning him out.
Agree that the English Media love to have a "scapegoat".
In fairness, so do most football fans, in their team. I can remember standing on the Kippax and hearing Paul Power and Richard Edgehill getting proper stick. They were both City youth team players who came through the ranks.
However, in Phillips's case, he was "held back" by Pep. So poor old Kalvin has never had the chance to kick-on from his Leeds days.
Luckily for Kalvin, Southgate still rates him as a fellow defensive midfielder with Declan Rice, so he will be in the Euro's squad...

You do know how much 1.5kg (3.3lb) is ? It's little more than the equivalent of a large "dump", if you know you're weight that accurately, fair play.

He's gone, he won't be back here, especially having commented on Pep as he has, but using this "overweight" argument is rather silly. The stats on his appearances for us, are more than enough evidence that he would never make it at City.

His start at West Ham is somewhat underwhelming, but the team seems to have turned to shit, and that's hardly his fault, I hope he can turn it round, as it's the only way we get rid of him eventually.
