Kalvin Phillips

It’s just not gonna happen for him. We’re walking a dangerous line without Gundogan as it stands

Why's Phillips the exception to the well known rule of the 'first year under Guardiola'??

WTAF is going on with the fans with this player...??

The first half of this friendly? 3/4 are the B list and the team didn't lose, which means he had to have some sort of positive impact or he'd have been hooked, non...?

Good pressure for Alvarez's goal and a few nice passes.

Unfortunately, his game still looks too littered with errors - a wayward pass out of play, or getting easily muscled off the ball, or just being slightly too slow to react.

But it was a pre-season friendly, and he's hardly played for a year, so I think we need to be patient and keep trying to get him minutes during this pre-season to see how it goes and how much he can improve.

Rodri is so good that any other specialist CDM we could employ would be a big drop-off. The few big players in world football that might come close to Rodri wouldn't take the cut in playing time that being his understudy would entail. In a way it's a nice problem to have, but it does leave us very reliant on Rodri.

There is a player in there with Phillips but he's got to take his chances when they come, because nothing he's shown so far suggests Pep would trust him in a meaningful competitive match if he had another viable option.

People are often saying there's a player in there but he's almost 28 and has had one decent Premier League season in his entire career...

Certainly not a bad player but for me he seems to lack a bit of intelligence with his positioning and just seem a second too slow in decision making. it's really those split second things and footballing IQ that separates top players from decent players and I'm not sure at 28 he's suddenly going to jump a couple of levels in the departments like that.

I said before we signed him that I don't think he's of the level to be playing for a club in our position and I still don't think so...but I would love to be proven wrong and for him to show that he does belong. I've just never seen anything that suggests he is, even before he joined us.

The club that see him every day in training, the club with the best coaches in world football decided not to act, what does that tell you?
It tells me that they cant find anyone to buy him and since we paid big money for him lets give him another season but its evident hes not good enough and pep knows it

Plenty of teams would buy him, he’s a good player even if they didn’t we’d loan him and bring somebody in. You want somebody to come and back up Rodri and be anywhere near Rodri’s level, well that’s not happening.
You think we’d play or keep him just because we paid big money (it wasn’t, we’d easily get our money back) for him thats ridiculous, to think that’s why we ‘d keep him.
Pep knows it does he? good mind reading, well done.

Phillips is good at passing some very good passes today and keeping the ball moving etc but when we get countered with Phillips as a CDM we look wide open in midfield. Looks slow and lethargic. That was the same issue last season with him as a solo CDM. He can't win the ball as well as Rodri. When Rodri came on those gaps were nullified.

For me, he is not a DM…

The club was open to selling him, but he refuses to go. One particular reporter has said a few times that Pep and his team were seriously disappointed with him in training last season

There were reports from Germany saying that Bayern might come for him later in the window when it could be clear to him he won’t get much game time and Pep hasn’t changed his mind. Let’s wait and see. An old Brazilian manager used to say, the problem with having a bad player in the squad is that eventually he gets used

Think they may have been open if they’d got Rice, they don’t seem so open now or actively looking for an alternative to Rice.
Which reporter said that, none I saw, in fact his attitude seems to be very good from the bits I’ve read.

I don't know how but the hype and expectation from KP has to be even less than when he first arrived.
Did you watch the documentary though? Such a good guy… Have you seen his interviews though? He speaks the motivated talk… ignore what your eyes see and just think of the rest…

He should be nowhere near our squad.

I said this before we signed him, during the rumours we were after him, during the last season and now after another shite 45min from him in pre season... he’s simply not good enough for us!

He released his documentary at a good time to get people liking him as a person but as a footballer if Rodri gets injured we are in big trouble.

I didn’t mention his name because the second I do all the prejudices come to the surface. It was Sam Lee. He talked about it again with Nedum Onuoha. The club can’t push a player out unless they accept to leave. I fully believe he thinks he can make it, but ultimately it’s not up to his head, it’s up to him proving on the pitch to the manager he deserves chances. Unfortunately I just don’t think there is a player in there enough to turn it around and it is concerning to me that we will end up overplaying Rodri yet again and this time without Gundo to help

Well we can disagree about his ability, think any question of his attitude is nonsense whoever said it.

he was not too bad. at the moment his problem is in his head and decision making. needs to concentrate on every touch.

Say we accept that though, considering we play a single pivot, which player is happy to play second fiddle to Rodri and is anywhere near Rodri's level when it comes to playing there in a Pep team. Bearing in ming Pep knows that position better than anyone in football and thought Phillips could do that job ?
