Keir Starmer

That's what you have read the question to be. But as the question followed "a landslide was won"- do you not think the more common reading of it was actually "what was achieved [after the landslide, with the large majority]"?

Is it possible to achieve a landslide and not have a large majority?

What do you plan to do with your large majority?

Form a government.

The point was never about gaining a landslide (that was just the outcome of the example) or what to do with your landslide but rather how you can win an election with policy rather than doffing your cap to a dead former PM.

I’m sure Johnson was roundly derided for his man crush / tribute act of Churchill.

You’re missing the wider point and focusing on the example. It’s a proven fact you can win over the “other side” by having a policy or policies that resonate with the majority. We’re seeing democracies across the world voting in populist governments and yes, often led by disrupters of the establishment with questionable policies but that should not mean the establishment simply carry on with tribal politics.

Unless electing an empty vessel who praises a leader from 40 years ago in a bid to win votes is really where we are happy to leave the bar.

Disrupting the establishment is OK as long as that disrupter is someone whose political view you believe in.

Incredibly the people who fight against "Populism" don't do a good enough job convincing the "Gullible" to vote for them.

I think this **** would say he’d suck the farts out of Sir Keith Joseph’s arsehole with a straw if he thought it might win him a couple of marginals.

This **** will say (or not say) literally anything to win the next election.

But I believe he will be a lot more left wing when in power. Think he’s just overly-cautious, because he’s terrified of fucking it up.

Sad for our democracy, that he has to misrepresent himself like that, but good for our country if he gets elected, especially if we can destroy those cunts.

Interesting talking to a colleague today who has done a complete about-turn regarding Starmer. When he was first elected we were both very much in the ‘Who is he and what does he stand for?’ mode. Since then, we’ve had various conversations and I’ve put across that he’s had to hide his true self because all and sundry will attack him for anything anywhere near the previous incumbents thoughts. Over that time I’ve also asked him to look for the real tell‘s of where he is at and what we should expect.

Gradually his eyes have opened but I’d never have thought Starmer‘s words on Thatcher would be the deciding factor. He didn’t go with the guff that Starmer was praising Thatcher but more that he had the intelligence to use her in a conversation aimed at those who were on the fringe of moving to Labour rather than any other option.

He also stated that he just wanted a serious person in charge of the country and if Starmer can turn the party around as fast as this then he’s sure fire safe hands for the future of the country.

Ps. He hates what the Tories have become and will refuse to vote for them while it has the ‘Thieves‘ running it.

I think Starmer is what the country needs, short term. Like you say, someone serious.

This lot are completely out of control. This they could implode. Brexit and Covid having killed them.

Brexit and Covid haven’t killed the Tories. Brexit won them the last election and Covid has provided them with their perfect excuse for every fuck up along with their one thing to boast about (vaccines) whenever they get held to account about anything at all. What’s killed the Tories is incompetence, corruption and utter contempt for the majority of the population.

Don’t agree mate. The former has been a complete disaster and continues to toxically divide them and don’t underestimate the strength of feeling in middle England about the Downing Street parties. That’s what precipitated this steep collapse in their support.

They could have got away with the features you describe if it hadn’t been for those factors, which have brought them to the fore.
