Keir Starmer

The relationship with the EU is a huge headache for the UK.

Starmers ‘plan’ to make Brexit work requires some degree of alignment with the EU. Any easing of non-tariff trade barriers and restrictions requires alignment and that will have the Tory press screaming about selling out and surrendering.

Any attempt to join the Single Market and/or Customs Union will be resisted by the EU, because we will require special exemptions and that boat sailed a long time ago; and why admit a country that will keep threatening to withdraw from the SM/CU unless we get what we want and then withdraw anyway? No one is forgetting the last decade or so and no one in Europe is rushing to repeat it.

Rejoining is out because the EU isn’t going to vote to let us back in because there is nothing in it for them.

What the UK public wants is for these issues to go away. Unfortunately all options will require endless and tedious negotiations with the EU which means the European issue will never go away. The price for banging on endlessly about the EU, and then leaving, is having to bang on about the EU until the end of time with the volume turned up to eleven.
Explain and explain and explain until the solution is obvious. I think with the right mindset and approach that we xcould get back in the single market. Perpetuating what has gone before will have similar results. The UK spirals downwards like a shot to pieces Spitfire. We need politicians and particularly a leader of the opposition with some guts and balls. Not this cowardice.

He is in effect perpetuating what has been Johnson’s trick. Telling the electorate that we can ‘have our cake and eat it’. Telling lies to curry favour. Instead of showing leadership and persuading with evidence. He is no better than them. A liar and a coward. Wait until he tries to explain how to fix the NI problem with someone a little more probing than Peston and persuades the electorate why they should give a shit about it. He won’t. Fucking coward.
Do you really think if he called Johnson out (like he does regular on PMQ's) it would work? Johnson is a pound shop Trump and constantly lies about everything. You can't beat a liar by calling them out every time when they are in power and have the majority on their side. Its classic far right divide and rule with the only way to counter it is by not allowing them to draw the battle lines.

The solution is already staring us in the face, but the Single Market requires freedom of movement, regulatory alignment and ECJ jurisdiction. What Brexit promised was all the advantages and none of the bits we didn’t like. This was never going to happen and it’s never going to happen, but we can’t except that and so we will keep going around in circles all the while thinking that if we repackage our proposals that ‘this time we will get what we want’.

The other factor is that we assume if a Labour Govt turns up all ready to accept the bits we don’t like that the EU will just wave us in with happy smiles. They won’t. The EU has no real issues with the current deal, so what can the UK offer that makes it worth their while, bearing in mind the next Govt will just as likely renege on any new deal? To negotiate any change the UK has to offer incentives, so what has the UK got to offer?

I think all I’m saying is we keep having internal discussions about what we want or need or can accept and never once seem to ask what 27 other countries are going to want or accept. I’m not even sure it occurs to us to ask.

Very disappointed with Starmer's speech. Categorically ruling out re-joining the SM or CU will only appease a dwindling number of fervent Brexiteers and make the rest of us wonder what the fuck he's going to do to address the very real issues caused by being out of them. There was no need to make that announcement now. The policy could have waited until much closer to the GE.

So join in and lie yourself? What a bloody state this country is in.

We. And by that I mean labour and Tory are not even having a proper conversation about how we improve things. Both of them operating at the lowest level of understanding of the least clued up voter. They must think we are all bloody idiots.

Had he known the Pincher story would have blown up as much as it has this week, I’m not sure he would have made the same speech, or at least not at this time. I get why he did though, he does need to stop the conservatives still using Brexit and getting the deal done as a narrative.

The problem is that we have a country that has been successfully gaslit by government and media into believing the lie that is Brexit. Its like Trump and the inssurections trials in a way that Starmer has to become PM and then walk us through the lies and nonsense for the penny to drop. For some people this will be impossible you will have the same gammons banging on about the Lisbon treaty vaccine roll out and any shit because they can't admit that they were wrong.

The problem is that around 40% of us are bloody idiots, and they are the ones who decide elections.

The Tories are tearing themselves apart. All they've got left is waffling on about vaccines and getting Brexit done, and more and more people are seeing that for what it is - a distraction from the real issues facing us today. By ruling out two of the ways out of this mess, Starmer is setting himself up to fail spectacularly when he can't come up with any real alternatives.
