Keir Starmer

Not only has he ruled out rejoining (which I agree with) he has ruled out the single market (which I think is just bloody stupid). Once again a politician that puts supposed party tactics in front of what is best for the country. I have moved him from tactician to coward. Could be good for the Lib Dems in England though.

It's the often discussed debate about gaining power or standing by your own principles. A decision most voters will also have to make. The relationship with the EU is a huge headache for Labour.

I don't think there is an obvious stance they can take tbh.

I was an ardent remainer and still think leaving was a very bad idea.

However, rejoining wouldn't work as we wouldn't go back in on the same terms we had and are probably too far down the road with going it alone to turn back now.
This.

I get what he is trying and wants to do but it boils down to "I can do it because I am more trustworthy " but it still leaves the UK out in the cold. I don't see it fixing the problems PLUS no idea why you launch your strategy knowing that the Durham Police report is due any day now and what you have promised to do....... just hold it back for a week or so ffs

Its called tactics, as I am sure Johnson or who ever replaces him would love to have a rerun of 2019 GE and replay the Brexit greatest hits. This is Starmer painting the battle lines early doors to try and make sure that this is an election on cost of living.

Its looking more likely to be a Lablib coalition and Starmer is banking on the Libs to want to rejoin the single market as a deal breaker. The other way of looking at if Starmer is PM he could come back from the EU negoitiations and say the only way we can sort this is rejoining the single market job done. Then there's the proportional voting the pesky libs want.

The tories are shitting themselves right now they know Johnson is an election liability and will only get worse until they force him out. They also know a lablib coalition is worse for them than a Labour majority because they know that Labour can pivot from their maniefesto and blame it on the libs particular on proportional representation which could wipe them out for a generation.

I can understand them taking that stance with the EU. He doesn’t at this stage need to say much about the SM. By ruling it out now he could lose votes.

I agree, normally starmers fence sitting is frustrating but on this issue he's probably right to do so as it's so toxic and divisive.

The relationship with the EU is a huge headache for the UK.

Starmers ‘plan’ to make Brexit work requires some degree of alignment with the EU. Any easing of non-tariff trade barriers and restrictions requires alignment and that will have the Tory press screaming about selling out and surrendering.

Any attempt to join the Single Market and/or Customs Union will be resisted by the EU, because we will require special exemptions and that boat sailed a long time ago; and why admit a country that will keep threatening to withdraw from the SM/CU unless we get what we want and then withdraw anyway? No one is forgetting the last decade or so and no one in Europe is rushing to repeat it.

Rejoining is out because the EU isn’t going to vote to let us back in because there is nothing in it for them.

What the UK public wants is for these issues to go away. Unfortunately all options will require endless and tedious negotiations with the EU which means the European issue will never go away. The price for banging on endlessly about the EU, and then leaving, is having to bang on about the EU until the end of time with the volume turned up to eleven.

He is in effect perpetuating what has been Johnson’s trick. Telling the electorate that we can ‘have our cake and eat it’. Telling lies to curry favour. Instead of showing leadership and persuading with evidence. He is no better than them. A liar and a coward. Wait until he tries to explain how to fix the NI problem with someone a little more probing than Peston and persuades the electorate why they should give a shit about it. He won’t. Fucking coward.
