Keir Starmer

Just a bit of "left" history. Even Chartist speakers were accused of preaching to the crowd - e.g. sounding radical to get elected to the Convention then at the Convention sounding moderate. Some speakers had "one set of speeches for the North and another set of speeches for the metropolis. What Harney saw as a form of hypocrisy, Lowery defended as a form of democratic control involving the rank and file of the movement in a complex mutual relationship of expectation, performance and response".

If Starmer gets rid of the Lords what will he do when he is no longer an MP?

How is he going to do it though?

Even if he gets a big majority and the commons vote to abolish the Lords, does it not then get passed to the Lords for them to vote on?

Turkeys and Christmas springs to mind.....

He'll create a load of new Lord's, a-leaping to abolish themselves and all their new colleagues.

They can suggest improvements to any replacement, but cannot actually stop anything. If nothing else, the Parliament Act gets invoked to ignore the Lords.

I'd be very surprised if anything came into being inside one parliament though - there's a lot of thought needed to get it right, and not something that can be hijacked easily.

Bloody hell you can’t fit them all in as it is, serious overcrowding if he adds to the numbers.

If the police do their job properly, there might be at least one less soon .

Sorry Michelle as I am presuming that both you and your husband are corrupt and lying through your collective teeth. Matt Hancock says hi .

He'll flood the Lords with yes men before the vote.

The trouble is, when they get there and find out you get £300 a day plus expenses for sitting in a warm room and having a little sleep, they might decide they like it and become 'no' men!

Getting rid of the Lords is fine but if it ever happens it will just be replaced by an elected chamber which means more pocket lining by politicians.

It's certainly very easy to screw it up completely. Rushing into it will be far worse than leaving it - they could start by just adjusting the numbers downwards to thin those taking the money.

I like the idea of having an amount of representatives per region, but also want some old hands (diplomats, military, even politicians) and experts available to point out the most stupid ideas.

It should be an expertise chamber with part time contribution. Whether it be health defence etc... People who work or have worked in those services should be giving their views on govt policy. Every level in the organisation should be represented.

As often I catch up a week late with the Guardian, but I enjoyed this from last Saturday.

“There might not be much in it between Rishi and Starmer, but then voters look over their shoulders at who heads a rabble of mad bastards.”

Conclusion is to deny the Tories ant target: "What evidence might show that Starmer was actually good at his job? How would politics look if he had a plan and it was working? It would look as it does".

Other nations have no problems arranging a functional second chamber. Why do we always have to be terrific and unique? Don't waste time reinventing the wheel. Simply look at other models, pick one and impose it. By the way, the Parliament Act can be used if the present Lords kick-off. Easy peasy, especially when implementing a manifesto commitment.

About time both Labour and the country had a sensible leader they can get behind.
