Why are we comparing goals and assist for defenders! Shouldn't we be comparing tackles or clean sheets. I may be crazy be I prefer defenders that can defend and let the midfielders create and score!

fullbacks have to be capable of attacking as well.

clearly clichy isn't good enough in the attack, and kolarov's defence sucks so it would help the team if both were sold and replaced.

deary me.

To base your opinion on stats alone is ridiculous but equally to completely dismiss that stats have relevance in an argument is just as ridiculous.

Out of interest, how many of Kolarov's goals and assists have come from open play and how many from set pieces?

Not only that, how many of Kolarov's goals and assists come against sub-standard opposition eg Barnsley?
WTF so its not equally important to score against Barnsley now? pathetic argument i must say

Does it really matter? goal is a goal, and is far better to score on set pieces than hitting the wall or over the goal right?

Pathetic argument? Not in the slightest. I only mentioned the standard of opposition as a means of demonstrating that bald stats alone do not an argument make. Kolarov's primary role is as a defender and quite frankly he stinks at it. The fact that he's rattled in half a dozen good free kicks plus 3 or 4 goals from open play against B list opponents, doesn't change that fact. Clichy is the better left back

Clichy is a fantastic fullback

in our system, we play with wing backs, clichy is not a wing back.

from wikipedia:

"The wing-back is a modern variation on the full-back with heavier emphasis on attack. The name is a portmanteau of "winger" and "full-back". They are usually employed in a 3-5-2 formation, and could therefore be considered part of the midfield, although they may also be used in a 5–3–2 formation, in which they would have a more defensive role.

In the evolution of the modern game, wing-backs are the combination of wingers and full-backs. As such, it is one of the most physically demanding positions in modern football. Wing-backs are often more adventurous than full-backs and are expected to provide width, especially in teams without wingers. A wing-back needs to be of exceptional stamina, be able to provide crosses upfield and defend effectively against opponents' attacks down the flanks. A defensive midfielder is usually fielded to cover the advances of wing-backs.[8]

Notable examples of former wingbacks are Giacinto Facchetti, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Gianluca Zambrotta, Nílton Santos, Carlos Alberto, Andreas Brehme, Leovegildo Júnior, Javier Zanetti and Bixente Lizarazu.

Some present day wingbacks include Dani Alves, Leighton Baines, Fábio Coentrão, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Maicon, Jordi Alba, Phillip Lahm, Kelley O'Hara, Ali Krieger and Marcelo."

We started with wingbacks about six times last season and changed to it about another five. And it worked about twice. All the other times it was a disaster. To suggest it was, or will be, our default formation is nonsense.

I know full backs are expected to get forward but its an added bonus, Clichy is one of the best around he is solid in all important aspects of his game, Kolarov is a decent player but Im not sold on him defensively but there isnt many solid left backs out there who would be willing to come knowing that it will be very hard to dislodge Clichy.
