have you guys seen this?
It's fashionable to criticise Manchester City these days, they're the latest Premier League team to be "Abramovic-ed", however, considering Arsenal's current economic plight The Blues are a godsend for Arsene Wenger.
What other team would willingly stump up £25m for Adebayor? And I doubt many would pay up to £19m (as has been reported today) for Kolo Toure in the current climate either.
Man City's riches have come along at the perfect time for Arsenal, and, so far, considering Wenger has to sell to buy, the manager has made the right selling moves in the transfer market.
Regarding Toure, the defence simply cannot continue as it is, and the Ivorian is a particularly weak link these days. Unfortunately, Toure has to be sold as he won't sit on the bench and Silvestre/Senderos/Eboue won't fetch pittance.
I watched Arsenal's 2008/09 End of Season Review a few days ago, and the amount of goals Arsenal concede from set-pieces is appalling. Not to mention the amount of times they are let off the hook by exceptionally poor defending when any ball is hurled into the box from any angle. It had to be addressed by Wenger, and Wenger appears to be addressing it.
My main concern, obviously, is what Wenger will do with his warchest.
If Wenger is merely "swapping" Toure for Vermaelen, that's a bad move. A lengthy injury to either Gallas or Vermaelen this season and Wenger would be forced to utilise Silvestre (god forbid), Djourou (hmmm) or Senderos (help!) in the centre back position.
The consequences of that would be predictably disastrous.
Wenger has already confirmed he has the Adebayor money to spend and therefore is likely to have the Toure money to spend too. My hope (prayer) is that the manager has already identified his targets and will move for them quickly should the Toure deal go through this week as expected.
Those purchases will need to be a centre back and long-awaited defensive midfielder.
Arsenal do NOT need a striker and I would be fairly surprised if Wenger made an addition up front. Van Persie, Bendtner, Eduardo, Vela should be enough firepower for the Gunners next season, with Walcott and Arshavin also able to play in forward positions too. Buying a centre forward now would stifle Vela and Bendtner who appear to have the sufficient quality to persist with.
Neither can Wenger afford to bring defensive players in late-August. Arsenal have the Champions League qualifiers and tough games at Everton and Manchester United in the league - so a key centre-back injury prior to those games could easily wreck Arsenal's start to the season.
Think back to a few months ago when Arsenal conceded 7 at home to Man Utd and Chelsea in five days. Do you really want a scenario where Senderos, Silvestre or Djourou partners new-boy Vermaelen at Goodison, Old Trafford and perhaps The City Of Manchester Stadium?
One bit of bad luck (ala Nasri) and it could easily happen, so Wenger needs to ensure that should such a scenario arise the squad is strong enough to cope.
After the sale of Toure (and Adebayor), Wenger will not have lack of funding as an excuse, he will live and die by this seasons transfer activity alone and will not be afforded the benefit of the doubt should the squad underachieve in the same manner as it did last season.
Got it from a link on newsnow. Think it tells both sides really well.
