Lack of enthusiasm thread

I would love to be optimistic about the new season, but i can't bring myself to be optimistic.

1) Kompany replacement still needed
2) Left back still needed
3) Forward player still needed

I have said for weeks we have needed another central midfield player, but that is because i fear Pep will carry on flogging the dead horse of the Gundo-Rodri double pivot. Most of us have seen that it clearly doesn't work and that it makes our transitional play ten times slower. Also greatly affects our intensity when pressing.

If we can get Bernardo back to the player he was in 18-19 season, then we could fix that problem in midfield, if we don't it could be a problem area. We do also have Foden in that area, but i worry we won't have the same control in midfield with Foden as we did with David Silva. He will bring more energy and a better goal threat to our team, but in terms of controlling a football match, nobody could do it better than David Silva.

Koulibaly is the obvious choice at CB and in my opinion, it is either Koulibaly or bust. I don't see us acquiring Kounde and i don't see us buying Gimenez. Napoli have already made it known that they will sanction the sale of Koulibaly, it is just a case of agreeing a fee and getting it over the line.

Last season in games where we struggled and went a goal down, our strategy was to spam hundreds of crosses in the box in the hope of scoring. We have no one in our team who is very good aerially, we have no one who can be the focal point up top (target man). I can't look beyond Cavani on a free transfer. He is good in the air, he is still pretty quick, very mobile off the ball and he is clinical. For me, this transfer would be an absolute no brainer. If we ever struggle in games and go a goal down, we have a much better chance of getting a goal when spamming crosses into the box with Cavani in your side. He is a fox in the box striker that we are lacking and with Aguero being a major concern, i don't think just having Gabriel Jesus is enough. It doesn't fill me with any confidence at all.

I think my biggest frustration this window has been the fact that we got slapped off Arsenal in the FA Cup semis and then slapped off Lyon a week or two later in the CL quarters and haven't done enough to address main concerns and put us all at ease. This was a big indicator that we are nowhere near the very top level (i.e. Bayern Munich) and we needed to react well and aggressively in this market to aim to bridge the gap.

My major worry is the near future. We have come nowhere near winning a CL and the worry is that players like De Bruyne and Sterling won't wait around forever to win a CL. Particularly De Bruyne, i keep referring back to the Lyon post match interview, but he looked so downbeat and frustrated after that interview, same problems, different season.

I know Silva and Aguero have shown us fantastic loyalty to stick with us all these seasons without coming nowhere near winning a CL, but i just feel De Bruyne is different to them. He is more outspoken, he portrays his emotions more in the media and he seems a very, very driven individual. Is he going to wait around for us to sort our shit out in Europe? I don't think he will personally. His contract expires in 2023, if City are still no closer to winning the CL, he will be off in 2022 in my honest opinion, just like Eden Hazard. People will say well that didn't work out for Hazard, but he did walk into a Real Madrid team that summer off the back of winning 3 CL on the trot.

The issue with us and Liverpool is, they already have that safety blanket of winning the CL. There is always going to be that burning desire within De Bruyne to win the CL, whereas Salah and VVD have already won it so if they win it again it will be a bonus to them.

I just really wanted City to really push themselves in this market and try and aim to get closer to Bayern's level, so far all i can say is we are absolutely nowhere near. I am just hoping we pull a few rabbits out of the hat over these next few weeks.

This is why I’m lacking enthusiasm. We have a much weaker squad than
last season and have not replaced
Kompany or Silva.

People forget that 2 years ago Sané was on the verge of signing a new 5 year deal. He was scoring or assisting in nearly every game and was then repeatedly dropped by Pep for no apparent reason, in favour of Mahrez or Sterling who were contributing very little at the time. That’s why Sané decided to leave- he was treated appallingly by Pep, let’s not forget we would not have won the league that year if Sané had not scored the winner against Liverpool or come off the bench against United away to score (one of many examples where Sané had scored in the previous game then been dropped). People can be so blinded by the success we have had and refuse to criticise Pep for anything but his decision making over the last 12 months on and off the pitch has been appalling, starting with not replacing Kompany at the end of last season and spending £120m on a right back we didn’t actually need (we had Walker and Danilo) and a defensive midfielder that will never be quick enough for the demands of the Premier League. I’m appreciative of all the success we have had and not saying Pep has to go by any means but he’s got off far too lightly for the decisions he has made in the last 12 months on and off the pitch and it his fault we have lost a world class player in Sane that was absolutely pivotal to the way we played

Just think football will never see another Aguerooooooooo moment because VAR will spend a few minutes deciding if it's a goal. VAR has had a big impact in my enjoyment of watching football. You cant go mad celebrating with a quick look at the linesman or ref and than carry on. Because we have no idea if the ref in the shed is going to right it off. Or is it that after 60yrs football isnt the game I grew up with, it's getting more and more away from us working class fans and becoming a more 'cold' product about getting in tourists fans and VAR trying to make the games 100% correct when in fact VAR is being used to take away the spontaneous joy of a goal

Above all three in your list we need a central midfielder of top quality.

We’ve lost Fernandinho (he still plays for us but we’ve lost him from midfield) and David Silva from our central midfield and not replaced Fernandinho with anywhere near as good a player and haven’t signed anyone to replace Silva at all.

We have the ready-made DSilva replacement in the squad already but Pep’s reluctance to play him in midfield (or play him at all) shows that we need to sign someone. [I'm talking about Bernardo Silva, excellent every single time he’s played in centre mid, Pep barely ever picks him there, and started to seem like he forgot Bernardo actually played for us full stop last season]

There is Foden too but he’s 20 and will be inconsistent.

We have more centre halves than we can play in two teams; we have a cracking left back (watch back the Liverpool win a few months back) in Mendy he just needs to get a rhythm going with his confidence, maybe we do need a back-up; and yes we do need a striker, especially with this being Agüero’s final season.

But unless Pep figures out that the best player in the Premier League from 2018-19 who played his best football in centre mid, and even though he had an inconsistent season last season but played all his best games in centre mid, is actually a City player... then we need a centre mid above all other positions!

You only have to watch these two videos to see that when Sané played he was involved in goals and assists more than any player in the squad in both seasons.

Think he did actually have the best goals and assists per minute ratio in both seasons.

I’m fucking gutted he’s left. Moreso than when Wright-Phillips left!
