Leeds away Fa Cup 1977/78

Always remember a game in the seventies when big Joe Corrigan made one of the best saves i have ever seen.The pitch that day resembled a ploughed field,think it was the F.A. cup,and we lost 1-0.

yes it was one if the best saves I have ever seen from Alan Clarke, an header joe went down to his right stopped it on the line, then Trevor cherry scored a minute later which joe totally cocked up. But that was joe save the hard ones miss the easy ones, but I remember last minute Colin viljoen centred for dennis tueart to head the ball it was in all the way then it just veared at the last second and went past the post I was gutted. I was in the side stand and it was mixed with city and Leeds it was going off everywhere.

i was at that one my first away 9 or 10 yo i think my mam took me i remember getting on a bus from leeds city centre to elland rd and it was full of leeds fans i thought i was gonna get a smack haha cheers mam

Great day out: massive following which was a norm in them days and mayhem all round. Always tasty and action packed at Elland Road in the 70's.

My dad took me to this game as a young kid, sat in the stand opposite the main stand and still remember being amazed at how many city fans were there

also remember him having his arm round my shoulders for protection as we made our way back to our bus, must have been kicking off all over the show but can't remember details

This might even have been my first proper away after wembley 76.

We had a Great team in the late 70s

Nearly the same for me. I was ten and i went with my dad and my dads cousin. We sat in the main stand about 4 rows from the front. A family of 5 city fans were sat near us. They went with about 15 minutes left. We got some evil looks off the Leeds scum when we went mental when we scored. The buzz that day was awesome. Always loved going to Leeds after that.

I had been to the league game a few weeks before and been spat on walking to the ground so was expecting it to be tasty. I remember the thousands of blues there in the Lowfield Rd and behind the goal, at least 10,000.... the atmosphere was incredible and City took the game to them, we scored the first goal, we went mental and with it being so crushed in the Lowfield Road end we all swayed and i fell under some bodies. Lucky for me a couple of blues saw this and grabbed hold of me and janked me up on my feet, a fortunate escape. Then when we were deservingly winning the game 2-0 those cocks in the spion kop took it upon themselves to invade the pitch. I recall them running over to our stand to try and get at us and our lot saying come on then, it really turned nasty.
At the final whistle we were making our way to the exits and bottles and bricks came flying over from outside the ground and landing on the concourse.
We eventually were let out and Leeds fans were on the otherside of the road and it kicked off, so not fancying a ruck lots of us ran under the stand and out the other end, as we got there a lot of blues started to head back towards the fighting and like a tactical pincer movement they trapped the Leeds fans in and chased them up one of the surrounding roads.
To honest, that season every away game i seemed to go too there was major trouble, if anybody remembers Derby a month or so before the cup game, it kicked off on the main road too the Baseball ground, that was the first time i saw the Cool Cats in action.

The year before wasn't so cool either

Or the year after, when Kiddo got that late equalizer in a 1-1. We were in that usual paddock in the corner of the ground, and to get back to the coaches you had to walk past the stand behind the goal. And for some reason the plod decided not to hold us back at the final whistle but to let us out at the same time as the local inbreds. Thar was the nearest I ever got to a battering at an away game, and I was what the hard men today would call a ''scarf''. Luckily a mate of this neanderthal who grabbed me saw that I wasn't one of the City boys and got his mate away from me. Not before I got a crack on the cheek though; never ran as fast back to a coach in all my life!

I don't post very often but I remember the 1-1 game well as it was Malcolm Allison's first game on his return.
Went in the car with mates and got split up after the match.Was also in the middle of the City fans behind the Stand as their "fans" charged out.
A City lad about 5 foot tall and 5 foot wide with a bobhat on gets hold of me and turns me round in front of him " We'll have 'em mate!"
The Plod then charges into the chaos on horseback and I managed to leg it !

Some great stories lads. I just knew from the footage it wasn't just a normal game. The team that day was a strong line up and played exciting football. Barnsey and tueart must've given those fullbacks nightmares.

I know this has been bought up before but I was watching the "Magic of the FA Cup" last night for hundreth time and was wondering what it must have been like to be at Elland Road that day. The atmosphere looked incredible and it seemed that City fans nearly had half the ground ? Anyone went on that day ? and any memories trying to get back to the train station ?

On a side note, I loved that Umbro kit with the diamonds down the side. I remember getting that for xmas that year complete with Tueart "like" tassles.

I was there that day.The day the draw was made was as we left Elland Rd having lost 2 - 0 and I said to my Dad I want them back here - then we came out of the hat as I said it!

When they invaded the pitch my Dad wanted to leave(we had a bad time there 72)but I said no way Im here to the end!

I was there and we had a huge following, i remember the pitch invasion and one city fan jumping over the fence and running into the Leeds fans on the pitch. Madness outside the air was thick with bricks and bottles. Great result but a dodgy return to the coaches with fighting breaking out everywhere.

I went to the train and getting back to the station even with the escort of the cops was frightening.

you should have tried it the season when Willie Donachie scored a last gasp equaliser for us there in a 2-2 draw ...

we then exited the South Stand and had to run the gauntlet back to the station WITHOUT a police escort ... and it seemed like the vast majority of West Yorkshires finest hooligan scum accompanied us on the 3 miles journey!

In the early seasons of the 1970's the cops there just didn't want to know , and they actually blamed you for going if you turned to them for help!

I was at that one too,very young.With my Dad and he tells me the plod just stood by and it was carnage.My Dad did one of the bravest things I have ever seen in my life when I was threatened by about 3 of them and I couldnt understand how anyone could have so little concern for their own safety as my Dad that day - until you get kids of your own and understand the instincts better!
