Very good point. So Hughes does all the coaching on his own, without advice or input from specialists in their field? Makes you wonder how any of the current 'Big 4' have maintained their levels of consistency, as none of them bar Chelsea (with Mourinho) has had a coach who has been a goalkeeper.

Any news on whether he is signing today or not???

True. But they all have decent managers as well, don't they. It's not just about consistency - it's also about having a coaching staff that know what they want the players to do.

I don't want to turn this into a Hughes-out rant (crap though he undoubtedly is), but he is inexperienced compared to their managers and he had never been a defender either. It would hardly be surprising if he didn't know how to coach the back four from a positional/tactical/defensive point of view, would it.

EDIT: I loathed the style of football psycho had us playing, but we didn't leak many goals, did we. One of the best defensive records in the league at the time (Was it THE best?) Having been a defender all his life, he knew what we needed to do. By contrast, as a player Hughes never went into his own penalty area and (coincidence?) our defence is shambolic.

So basically any ex player can't feasibly manage a team competently because by your reasoning the player will only adequately coach the position he played. So (for example) Norwich (Brian Gunn) will have excellent goalkeeping next year but will be f***ed as soon as the balls outfield. What absolute rubbish. And even if there was some truth in this reasoning is it not fair to consider that he has this covered since his coaching team includes Kev Hitchcock (ex Keeper), Glyn Hodges (ex Midfielder) and Mark Bowen (ex defender). btw I am not saying the defence is ok, it still clearly needs tweaking/adding quality to.

i cant understand why we are hanging about for this guy, there are better players out there.
just let him stay at everton and go for some one else ffs.
if he then starts angling for a move in january when jagielka is fit? tell him his chance has long gone!

Left foot defender can play CB or Fb scores goals settled in Manc area, kids at school, proven in PL Perfect for what we want IMHO Doesn't Everton's reluctance to let him go tell you something?
