Liverpool - post match thread.

It's all about perspective as @ManCityX's post says. People absolutely are entitled to be disappointed we lost and be disappointed that we are 10 points behind the leaders. But there's a heck of a lot more to football and football management than turning up, snapping your fingers, and turning everyone into Pele.

The comment you make about it being "almost impossible" to not improve on last season sums up the problem for me. There's a sense of entitlement which I personally find a little nauseating. We won a trophy last season, got the European cup semi final where we lost by the odd goal to Real Madrid, and managed to finish in the top 4 for the fourth season on the bounce or something like that. It's actually VERY difficult to improve on that when half the team need replacing.

The thing is, the mood music is changing all the time. We are now being massaged and conditioned to think top four will be a remarkable achievement.

We have hired in possibly the most expensive manager in the world to direct one of the most expensively assembled squads. The least I expect is a dogfight in the title race, which I still hope to see, not some unseemly scrabble for CL qualification and a promise of jam tomorrow. I also expect to see players sweating blood for the shirt. If that's being entitled then fcuk it, I'm guilty.

TBH, there's nothing in that post of any real interest or relevance to anything. Pep's been in charge six months. Only someone who lives on an island and doesn't follow football would suggest that he's under any pressure from the people who employ him.

And that is the main problem

I'm happy to give Pep the time he needs, albeit watching games like that is extremely frustrating.

But what worries me is that Pep's style is supposed to be about creating numerical overloads with lots of players in close proximity monitoring in the ball quickly & outnumbering the opposition players in that part of the world. Have we seen any evidence of that?

We don't seem to have moved on from last season, when the nearest player to the man with the ball was 15-20 yards away.

Some mardarses on here.. Did not play well, but Pep is trying to change and instil a totally new way of playing but some "supporters" can't see that. Grow up and look at the big picture

Well Karen you're 100 per cent wrong. Been going to City since 1967, used to help my mate and his dad sell programmes between the turnstiles and the Kippax in the 70 and had a season ticket since Kinkladze's time. Can't just take it for granted that SM will stick around indefinitely.

Yep his kids are die hard city fans now for life.

10/10. Wicked post. Thank you.

The only worry I have is that when we bring in the new full backs and a centre half we have to make sure we nail it. We can't afford to slip up with these transfers.

Our record at buying defenders obviously isn't great but don't think it would take much to improve on the current lot really I suppose.

Stones needs to be playing alongside a top class and experienced centre half every week if he's to realise his potential.

I haven't read the thread and doubt that I want to. I'm sure that I am out of step with a lot of people.
I don't think so, but people are rightly not happy with some of what is going on.
I actually think you can see what Pep is trying to do take shape. Unfortunately, his players keep letting him down in decisive ways too frequently and results are worse than our overall performances.
I couldn't see it first half today, it was disjointed immediately they scored. Individual mistakes will always occur, but we shouldn't lose every time we make them.
Today was a prime example, we restricted Liverpool to 5 shots at goal, 12 below their game average; whilst having almost twice as many shots as them and more than they allow on average but we allowed them to, sucker punch us and score with their only shot on target.
I don't think we did restrict Liverpool tonight, we allowed them to score virtually the first time they got in our half, from that moment they knew to sit off and let us play about on the half way line, because we never looked like creating anything. Aguero didn't touch the ball once in 90 minutes in their box, in fact we had very few touches in their penalty area.
They produced one bit of quality to score but we gifted them the ball cheaply and couldn't produce that necessary bit of quality at the other end despite our players' ability. People can blame the manager for all sorts of things but he set his team up well and was entitled to expect more from them.
Yet he seems to be happy with the performance, now I know what he says to the media won't be what he says to the players, but he shouldn't be saying he was happy with tonight, it simply wasn't good enough, on many aspects.

Seen very little evidence that Pep has changed anything tbh other than making us significantly weaker in the GK position.

I'm starting to feel we've all had our pants pulled right down.

100%.

There's something else though. There's a reluctance amongst a few to acknowledge that the problem isn't just the defenders. There's players in our squad who are rightly revered for the things they've achieved. Pep has come in and respected that and given them a chance. They will all be jettisoned in the next 18 months IMO though. There's no room for sentiment in football and what's quite clear is that we aren't playing like a Pep team. The reason is that some of the players aren't physically capable or mentally smart enough.

But Pep doesn't want defenders who just defend as he doesn't want a goalkeeper who just makes saves, he'd like 11 midfielders if he could so we may get new fullbacks, centre halfs but we won't necessarily defend any better

Adapting to a philosophy or not, I don't buy that with all the talent we have in this squad, failing to create anything whatsoever is a by product of adapting.

It just isn't. I don't see anything different to last season. Even the effort and application, I thought that would be a minimum under Pep, is totally absent.

We are once more engaged in a top 4 battle, rather than a title race. And a title race is exactly what we should be involved in.

rags working at City, that's never happened
bluwes, people get paranoid on here when someone says something they don't agree with. Been going to City since 67, season ticket holder since 95 and sold programmes in the 70s. And when I lived on the south coast I travelled to all home games with my son the season they were relegated to third tier.

Why so much nonsense directed against Pep for ?

He did not miss the 2 penalties against Everton, nor did he give away a last minute goal to Boro, nor did he miss an open goal against Chelsea from 2 ft. A loss of at least 4 to maybe 7 points that could have us second or top.

This is going to be very tight second half and every game is important and I agree with what he said we start with Burnley and start picking 3 points at a time.
