New Brighton across the water is ok for a visit. It's a short train journey from Lime Street or St.James. The promenade walk gives some good views of Liverpool waterfront. Theres a couple of decent boozers over there and a great Turkish restaurant.
Also on a sunny day, the coastal path from New Brighton to West Kirby is not too far & offers some great views. The bit between Hoylake & West Kirby passes through a nature reserve at Red Rock with is home to a colony of natterjack toads.
Similarly, Formby is gorgeous with a red squirrel reserve, some really nice sand dunes & a great beach walk to Southport, where the size of the beach when the tide is out is massive enough to encounter any other people.
