This sacking is clearly an admission that they're signings have failed bar Enrique. Any new potential manager would need a shit load of ££/$$ to turn this side around, even at that it would be at least 5 years of steady investment for them to even begin competing for the league! IMO of course.

Comolli's theory of using the moneyball system was doomed. The thing is will Henry and co hang around, or splash the cash needed, when it becomes clear that might be in the region of £150 million?

... John W Henry spent somewhere in the region of a half billion to win the baseball title. He will spend again. For the Prems sake I hope so.

I'm no expert in baseball but do they have transfer fees? I thought they just 'traded' players? They have spent £100mil on players already before they start paying wages. Admittedly it isn't near half a billion yet but its an awful lot of money to win a cup. And as good as winning a cup is, it isn't going help recoup the money

Was that his own money though or the Red Sox?

There are no transfer fees in American sports, it's all wages and agents fees. The top Baseball player reached free agency this summer, Albert Pujols, he signed a 10 year deal with the Los Angeles Angels worth $254!!! That's approx £160m, or £16m a season, so just slightly more than £300k a week! And that's without considering the huge sum his agent will have got for negotiating that deal.

They have mixed version of "transfer fees", "cash incentives" and more. I follow baseball a bit, I've grown a love for the Chicago Cubs (haven't won the title since 1908). When Henry bought the club with his firm they had to trade most of their players. When most clubs trade players they have to pay a good amount of the players existing contract. The Red Sox were forced to pay most of the dead wood their money before they broke contract records to compete with the Yankees.

The Red Sox have a long history with Japanese baseball and shelled out something like £70 mil in a transfer fee for some pitcher who couldnt last to what would be the 55th minute in football. Henry is all about the rinse and repeat method. He essentially 'sold out' Americas most beloved ballpark to corporate America and formed seats out of a very special part of the stadium.

The "moneyball" thing is a bit of a myth and a lot of hype. The origin comes from Billy Beane who is still yet to win anything using the method. The problem with what Comolli did was he bought the most overpriced commodity in world sport. English players. At their real value and their actual performance it probably should have worked. But football is a sport where even a turd will shine amongst other turds. In most sports a bad team is a bad team.

Not as much tax on it either. But there are 'transfer fees' especially in the case of Daisuke Matsuzaka. The term is rather tough to get into in American sports.

These numbers are big. But most cities have only maybe two clubs.

Bill James is the guy who came up with moneyball and he's at the red sox. The red sox are in a superb position. They are in a one horse town, they are in the same division as the yankees and play in the only baseball league thats worth watching. Thats the rub, aside from the rags almost all the american investors have hit a brick wall in terms of moving their teams forward. The principle of relegation and promotion is alien to them, they like any owners want to their money back. The thing is the real rich boys ain't yanks, so they didn't have enough to start with and want what they do put in back that much sooner.

Re: Liverpool Thread 2012

I went to RAWk last night and it was just as I expected.

They are so happy this happened so they could point that those awful transfers not KKK's fault despite his numerous repeating that none of the players came without his full blessings.

Dalglish personally went to pick adam up for his transfer and also cut his holiday short to seal the transfer of downing, but of course he didn't want these players and it's all comolli's fault

Matsuzaka was a different type of deal as he was moving from the Japanese Baseball League to the MLB. In that scenario teams must pay the "selling" club a fee, normally set in the millions of dollars. Movements between MLB clubs don't have transfer fees like we'd view them, they are normally trades or players moving under free agency.
