Tbf Benfica were european heavyweights in those days, and Gladbach had a tremendous team in the 70's winning the Bundesliga 5 times and the UEFA cup twice, but overall the path to the final was much easier in those days when only the national champions played.

Yep.
Gladbach beat us in the uefa Cup in that era too.

The uefa Cup,in those days, was arguably tougher to win.
Two quality sides from,Italy,Spain,Germany,etc qualified.
And a two legged final.

Liverpool are the last team that should be carrying on about easy routes to finals

1977 European Cup - Crusaders of Belfast, Trabzonspor, St Etienne, Zurich (Gladbach in final)
1984 - Odense, Bilbao, Benfica, Dinamo Bucharest
1985 - Poznan, Benfica, Austria Vienna, Panathinaikos

Inter, Benfica and Villarreal ffs to get to the final last year
consistently managing to pull Porto out during the last decade at key times in the knockout rounds

Imagine a parallel universe where the good Sheikh bought the dippers rather than City. They would probably have won everything for a decade but would still be playing the victim. I'm glad I live in this reality :)
Remember the banners in the kop - begging Dubai to buy them

What utter hypocritical know-nothing fuckwits
