Local nutters/eccentrics

First one springs to mind is Jonny Rocco,he could turn up anywhere and cause a scene.
Two old west indian boys who played the banjo in Ashton precinct, they had a very limited repertoire, and cost me my Saturday job when I refused to ask them to move from outside the shop I worked in.
There was an old woman on Stockport Rd. in Ashton who used to scream at the cars,I later found out her only son was run over and killed and that tipped her over the edge.
She scared me witless, when I was five.
An old boy who wandered around Piccadilly gardens wearing cricket pads in the early eighties, saw him on my way into work.

Marc Bolan Busker outside Boots on Market Street? He can't sing and he can't play the guitar but it doesn't stop him trying.

Crazy Crack Head outside the bus station in MCC. Black guy with a guitar that usually had one string with a huge picture of Madonna on the back of it. Never gave him money, but frequently bought him guitar strings. God forbid anyone say anything bad about her though and it was like WW3 was about to break out.

Alan the bin man in Failsworth, he used to kick the bins back up the drive screaming and shouting at them (I think he lived in Woodhouses). Lurch at the Roxy on Oldham rd. fucking weirdo that seemed to love upsetting little kids at the matinee.

city kev, that brought back memories about the inn of good hope,...vinegar vera anyone ?

-- Thu Aug 29, 2013 1:59 pm --

sorry just seen the earlier post re vinegar, does anyone remember the big black guy in city ctre, in the bus conductors uniform and plastic microphone belting out songs ?

There's a bloke in his 60's or 70's who walks from Oldham to Ashton and back over and over again. Always wears the same green duffel coat with the hood up, even in the hottest of weather.

Looks a bit like the bloke from he film 'Up', carries a shopping bag on wheels if I remember right. Clearly homeless and can often be seen at the up near the Huddersfield Road end of what used to be Mumps roundabout.

Also, late 80's early 90's in New Moston there was an old fella simply known as 'Sam' who appeared to walk the streets making bizarre coughing/choking/screeching noises. Used to be able to hear him all hours of the day and night.

We dragged him around with us on a pub crawl one Saturday afternoon, had a right laugh, he was a nice guy, didn't drink, but kept belting out songs all day for our amusement.

See him regularly, corner of Hudds road and Cross street near the Fiat dealers... Somebody told me he is from a very wealthy background but ended up like that due to family feuds...
