I don't think you've understood what I'm saying. If we started acting like Real Madrid did when we went 1-0 up and started time wasting, diving about and generally spoiling the game do you not think we would have held out to go through?
There were supposed to be 30 minutes of extra time played but because of Real Madrid's 'gamesmanship' there were actually only about 10 minutes played, that is the difference between us and them, we tried to play football for 90 minutes and it bit us on the arse. Once they went ahead they used every shithouse trick they knew to go through and it worked. Much like we did against Atletico but, as I said, it's incredibly rare for us to go down that route.
If Casemiro had got the cards he should have done in the first half, even if it was just one yellow you don't think that would have affected his game as the central midfield destroyer?
The difference between Real Madrid and other 'European' style teams and us is that when Fernandinho commits a tactical foul he just walks away and takes the yellow card but the teams that use the so called 'dark arts' will roll around pretending to be injured while their teammates swarm the ref putting pressure on him and so generally get away with it. Believe it or not, if you kick lumps out of the opposition playmaker it generally affects their ability to make a mark on the game and if you have worked out pretty early on that you'll get away with it you'll continue doing it (see Rudiger on De Bruyne in last years final for an extreme example of this). I've never seen us make an effort to 'let an opponent know you're there' but in just the last few weeks Real, Atletico and Liverpool have all gone that route against us and got away with it, affecting not just that game but the ones that followed.
We always used to laugh at European games with all the theatrics and snide cheating but just because it's now infested the Premier League doesn't make it any less ridiculous and it doesn't make it any less cheating.
