Saints fan in peace.

Just wanted to say that Shaw and Lallana and Boruc and Clyne and Schneiderlin are NOT FOR SALE!!!

Forget about signing any of our players as we are now a top 6 side and will not trade with other top 6 sides like manchester city

Cant imagine why any player would give up being 10 points adrift of the top 6 midtable finishes to play for a title challenging team. That would be ludicrous

-- 13 Jan 2014, 10:55 --

lol. ok lovely.

Look at Rodwell - he moved to soon now look at him

We are not a selling club anymore so back off

Rodwell didn't move to soon you balloon head. He has suffered more injuries than I have eaten hot dinners lately thats why he doesn't play much

Saints are a good side, but are not a top 6 side. They havent finished in the top 6. They were in the top 6 earlier in the season and then played the other top 6 sides and are now not in the top 6. City, Rags, Chavs, Liverpool, Spuds, Everton, Arsenal are all above Saints. A top 8 side competing with the likes of Newcastle. That is what you are.

£30m for the latest Kid to look decent for a couple of seasons? This is a joke right? I'm not saying he isn't a very good young player. Anybody can see that. But he's completely untested at the level we need him to perform at. He COULD develop into the next Bale... But we would be mad to pay £30M to find out.

The only similarity to Bale is they both played LB for Southampton. Other than that they are completely different players. Bale was always more of an attacking player not a good defender. Shaw is a good defender but not much of an attacking player. He could certainly develop into a better attacking player in the future but he's never going to turn into a Bale type player so we should certainly not pay for "the next Bale".

I really like Southampton so please stop saying these stupid things OLallana. Shaw would be a fantastic signing, not worth 30 million currently though.

I take it the story was bollocks as nothing has been said since, and if there were anything in it Talkshite would have been all over it saying that he'd ruin his career coming to us.

Other than his Birth Birth Certificate, can anyone, other than their own subjective opinion, give me some indisputable evidence, why we should consider buying this player, when we have at City already, Kolorov, Clichy and Zabaleta (emergency) who are all equally as competent defensively with Kolorov miles ahead offensively?

In short, if our academy cannot produce a player as defensively capable as Shaw, by the time Kolorov and Clichy are pensioned off then we have failed. If he was both defensively sound and an offensive genius, then maybe, just maybe, his British Passport might just justify the expense. Currently however, this is not the case.

Just to put you right Rodwell has been beset by injury largely down to his growth problems which exacerabate matters, similar to Gerrards early years. This has nothing to do with him moving.

English or not, why would you spend that amount of cash on a left back when Kolorov is in the form of his life?

Does anyone seriously believe he is even 50% of the player Kolorov is this season!

For me, no chance.

Agree with you mate... Forget the quoted £30m....

What is even more laughable is the posters who think he's better than Kolarov... Get a grip FFS... Nowhere near as good as Kolarov or Clichy...

He may well be in a few years... but now? No chance!

As much as many may disagree with me, I really do think we are going to go for him.

Hes English, young and potentially very very good. But this is the side of it.

What does it for me is that by the looks of him he is PERFECT for our team.

Southampton play a very similar game to us, fast, attacking exciting football with both their fullbacks bombing forward yet have undoubtedly a lot less talent and experience and generally overall good players. Shaws crossing is unbelievable, some of the balls hes played have been unreal for an 18 year old and in my opinion will match Kolarov on that front, yet is also lightning quick and defensively sound, and could very well be our No.1 Left Back for many, many years. He also has an impeccable attitude, unlike that Rag throwaway Morrison.

While the price may be very high, id say well get him for about 15M with stacks of bonuses and rewards if he fulfils his potential to Southampton. We may even loan him back, but im pretty confident this is what Pelligrini sees in him as well.

For what it's worth, I totally agree with you. Luke Shaw is going to be England's next left back, and once he gets his place in the team he'll stay there for the next ten years. The naysayers will eat their words imo.

Are there any comparisons to Gareth Bale?, if there is then I hope we smash any British transfer record!.

None what's so ever he doesn't score goals he doesn't have a decent free kick in him but he is very solid left back in the mould of Bridge

Hmm can't shoot, can't kick and is like Bridge=save the money. :-) .

This is just the media hype as usual because he's British. I saw a left back playing with Saint- Etienne, he is much better and won't cost more than 4 Million euros. Hi crossing and free kick are unbelievable. His name is Ghoulam and that'd be a deal.

Could we stop going on about the price? Please? .. Seen many quality English players around our squad lately? Other than Hart? Any potentially world class Englishmen are going to cost an absolute fortune, and they do so because going out and buying the cheap foreign version isn't always an option.

Richards, Milner, Lescott - All will be going or gone under our Barca revolution. If Rodwell doesn't sort his injury issues out you can add him to the list, and Barry has all but gone already. Any English players good enough to go into our starting 11 we should be jumping on like a fat kid on a badly made sandwich.

Some people are forgetting the fact that we are in DESPERATE need of some quality English players. Is Lescott's future here? no. Is Richards? Unlikely unless he improves and becomes less injury prone. Is Barry's? No. Is Rodwell's? Probably yes, because nobody will take him off us, but he's perma-injured so what's the point of him? There is no point.

So who are our home grown players going to be? Unless we want to be only allowed a squad of about 21 or 22 players, we need to be on the look out, and signing, the very best English young players.

I'd have Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley right at the top of my list. If Arsenal weren't doing so good in the league this year, i'd also go for Wilshere.

We need to be after these kind of players. Players that will be good enough to remain in our squad for many, many years. No more Scott Sinclair's please.

This is more than a well expressed opinion Trev, - it's a fact.
Players such as Shaw and potentially Barkley would probably cost us around £50mil. (Nathaniel Clyne would be another one I would like to think we are looking at.)
But that rather hefty investment could be justified for all the reasons you pointed out above.
I also think our sqaud needs a greater English influence to be honest, for other reasons than squad size and meeting regulations. I'm personally not that happy about seeing a potential Manchester City starting XI with one, or possibly NO English players in it.
Sure, in maybe five years time, the Academy might have presented us with a few starters (if we're lucky), but until then we need to do what it takes.
