Maybe after the World Cup I'll get what others see in Luke Shaw, at the moment I just see a safe left back, certainly not a player who you'd value as one of the top left backs in world football

Unless Baines gets a knock, I highly doubt you will see him at all in The World Cup.

Am assuming the quoted wages are just compensation for the number of years he has spent learning his trade through the rags youth teams

Luke Shaw the subject of record-breaking bid from Manchester United

Manchester United are pushing hard to secure the services of Southampton starlet Luke Shaw as the player lines up for England against Costa Rica. The bid, reported to be a quite staggering £34 million will make the young England left-back one of the most expensive defenders in the Premier League.
The Saints had previously rejected a £27 million bid and refused to comment on the fresh bid from United. The bid will also, if accepted, make the teenager the most expensive in world football, overtaking Wayne Rooney.
Southampton have stated that they are both under no pressure to sell their assets and that they will not negotiate on their valuations. Shaw has huge potential and is already one of the best defenders in the country as a teenager so its perfectly conceivable that his value could continue to rise with some expecting the eighteen-year-old to feature for England for years to come.
The player has previously been the subject of transfer speculation from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal and Spurs during the 2012-13 season. Shaw has been compared with fellow Southampton youth product Gareth Bale and has been praised for his speed, decision-making and defending skills. Shaw has made 60 appearances for Southampton since 2012 and two for England since making his debut this year.

So he'd he the 4th most expensive defender of all time.....HAAA

And the most expensive FB ever. Danni Alves went for 29m and he was considered the premier FB in the world(even though he can't defend to save his life). Funny how the media see this as a good thing because he's English but if he was French they would be going on how big money is ruining football.

That is absolutely true. Our media is terribly xenophobic.

Shaw is a good young player, but £34m? How can the Premier League want to impose homegrown quotas if clubs are being quoted such ludicrous amounts for English players.

For instance, The Red Dipper's paid more for Andy Carrol & Jordan Henderson than we did for Yaya & Silva........ Milner & Lescott cost us the same as Yaya & Silva and people wonder why club's seek better value from abroad. The world's gone fuckin mad!

£34m is steep but given his age he could stay for a good 12 years, so if you factor in how much they would save by not buying a few replacements then long term it's a good deal.

Not saying he would stay that long but if he fulfilled his potential then it's not impossible
