Maicon

I have only really noticed him during the Confed Cup, and his power and pace down the right has really stood out in this tournament, however his crossing has been very poor. Whether that's typical I don't know.

We need to strengthen our squad in key areas such as Centre-Forward (tevez) and Central Defence, and I'd like to see a left winger come in.

But we should also keep our eye on the mkt for any outstanding talent that becomes available that can transform us like Lucio or a John Terry. I'm not sure Maicon comes into this category because his crossing has been poor. From what I have seen of Brazil in this tournament, Robinho, Fabiano and Lucio have been their stand out players. Kaka has been good but does not look like he's on a different level to the other Brazilians

Regardless the point remains that we have 3 decent quality RBs in Richards, Zab and Onouha (who can easily cover there). Maicon would be a waste of money which could be spent where we need it. I know we have limitless money almost but we don't want to just buy chaff because we can. Even if it does upset Chelsea ;)
People on here say they want the club to bring in great players, but when we are linked with the best of the best they argue that our current squad is better, if that is true then why don't we win things yet?
I cannot understand it its not like we are selling to buy!
Rant over.
We have a good set of players and need to strengthen elsewhere in the squad. Why would I advocate getting in a worse player than the ones we have? I want to strengthen but not bring in over-rated players where we have good players already. That's mindless. Maicon cannot surely be considered the best of the best. Really? Is that how bad Right backs are these days? He's an average winger at best, but his passing is poor.

Haha. That was classic, Spain were Rag-esque in that they almost expected to win simply because they turned up. It showed them that you cannot expect victories in football.

Well that is fair enough but if we are in for him it's clear that Hughes rates him but thats besides the point. I did quote you but I did not intentionally aim this at you, but I have heard almost every player we're after being said to be 'no better than what we have' (Terry was one I think) , I just think people are overrating our own players too.

Not true, mate. He is absolute quality going forward, and FB is a prime attacking position for any top side. He has the odd bad game, maybe; but there hasn't been a top player who hasn't. Sign him up!

That's ok, I don't think Hughes will be looking in that area personally as I think it's one where we're sorted. I don't rate Maicon but other signings we've been linked with I do rate RSC for example, Tevez deffinately, Eto'o absolutely, Lescott yes and even Crouch is better than what we had last year. I'm all for new people coming to join us in our weak positions i.e. CB and Striker plus I think Barry was a brilliant signing and will prove to be invaluable for us. People seem to forget that Richards was coming good at the end of the season and was close to his best form for the last 6-8 matches. I expect him to improve again next season and if he buckles down I think HE will be the best RB in the world in 2-3 years. ;)
