Maine Road (now) photos

Have never been anywhere near Maine Road since we left. Would just be too strange. Even after 8 years and seeing those pictures and everything it will never quite sink in that the ground isn't there anymore. How can a place where I had so many happy memories as a child(and many unhappy ones too but they make us what we are) just not be there anymore? Couldn't come to terms with that.

Having lived there as third gen' Rusholme folks (not Moss Side as TH will no doubt claim ;-) ) I should be sad about those pictures and in some ways I am.

But what you would sense if you went and looked at it now is that City moving out has allowed the area to be born again. I reckon people who lived there rather than just visiting for the footie would share that TBH

Sadly the rest of the housing stock now looks even sadder and older and needs to be modernised IMO.

Its funny though that City being where they are now is acting as a massive boost to an area of such deprivation when the clubs home for so long was almost made to suffer for City's presence for many years and only felt the benefit once the club left.

Unfortunately I'm too young to remember Maine Road properly as I was just a young boy, but I remember some random tiny details like the bird on a piece of string at the corner of the kippax and standing on my sight every 2 minutes when city attacked so I could see as well as walking outside the main stand and seeing all those boards with pin badges on. (sorry for the lack of full stops).

But I am constantly told stories and shown pictures of those days and when I see a tribute to Maine Road or read the book it brings a tear to my eye as I know I was born a little too late to remember exactly what it was like to experience the atmosphere, comedy and drama of Maine Road!

My brother constantly tells me that I am lucky because I was born at the right time to see city win the FA cup and beat scum at wembley or watch us play in the champions league next season (which is fucking mint!), but I would rather have waited an extra 10 years and experience the Maine Road days.

There is a memorial. The Main Stand roof is in a field somewhere. Can be seen on Google Maps. Can't for the life of me remember where though.

Correct, the main stand roof is in pieces in a farmers field next to chelford market. You won't believe what it's used for....... Pigs to shelter!, not joking, you can see them from chelford rd. Pub next to the farm Egerton arms.

thats just wrong!!

But.... as "typical City" gets erradicated more and more each day because as a club we are much more efficient......

.... there's a bizarre reassurance that "typical City" still remains, in a field , where all of our 1981 Cup money was invested into a roof for a stand, by Peter Swales, who at the time thought it was the way forward...... and its ended up, merely housing farm animals.

I love City!!

I miss Maine Road!!
