Maine Road (now) photos

Unfortunately I'm too young to remember Maine Road properly as I was just a young boy, but I remember some random tiny details like the bird on a piece of string at the corner of the kippax ...

Bringer - that bird followed us to Eastlands! It's usually "hovvering" near the corner flag between the Colin Bell and North (Family) Stands...

I think it used to have a name too - but can't remember it!

Just looking at those images makes my gut wrench. Its so sad when something that represents so much to you is taken away.

Those pics are eery. And that club shop! Remember being stuffed in there to buy my Kappa kits back in the day. Infact, it might not even have been that one. There used to be another club shop didn't there, that looked like an old house?

Said it before. I miss the whaft of tobacco and the beer belches, the being shoved into a metal barrier as we went on the break.

I wonder if the Sheikh would have bought us if we were still there?

I haven't been back since the last day, don't want to see that it really has gone. Some great days there, my first game was Southampton 3-3 in 94, i was only 7 and it was amazing then i was hooked and i convinced my dad to get us a season ticket the season after, my last game would be Southampton again, twist of fate eh!

Many great moments.

When Neville fed the goat, The cup matches against Leeds, West Ham and Liverpool (Proper cup games with proper atmospheres!), My first derby game in which Beckham scored a free kick, looney Millwall fans, seeing Kinkladze's brilliance, slick football under Keegan, running on the pitch after winning the play off semi final against Wigan and loads of top people i met down the line.

All probably crap sounding memories to what we are doing now but they were brilliant times that i will never forget even if we were crap.

Thanks for posting the pics mate. Unbelievable !!

I remember when they moved from the old souvenir shop on the front into the old social club and thinking "brilliant, a decent size shop at last". And to think we are now going through something like our 3rd re-furb of the new shop at COMS.

Anyone remember the shop when it was just one of the houses on the corner opposite the ground. It was just like someone's front room or an ordinary front to a shop.

-- Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:49 am --

Just dug out a pic from the final day with a similar view of this one, just to comapre.

I remember that fondly. They had all those pin badges under the glass counter and I used to get a couple at the start of every season.

Just dug out a pic from the final day with a similar view of this one, just to comapre.

I think thats the shop I remember too, but when they launched the Kappa kits I think they moved to the bigger one in line with that kit launch. I just remember being squashed like sardines, armed with £80 in my back pocket.

Maine Road was well past it's sell by date, (imo) a mishmash of four different stands, parking was a joke, whoever designed the "Kippax" stand should have been shot, although I appreciate money was tight at the time.

I'm as sentimental as the next fan, going to games since 1961 but it was time to move on.....
