Manchester’s Changing Skyline

Update on the Manchester Town Hall redevelopment.

I don’t think there isn’t anyone who doesn’t love Manchester Town Hall.

It’s going to look amazing once the redevelopment is completed and it’s reopened to the general public. :-)

Fantastic building!

Don’t get me wrong, I think the boxes are good as they are staging the basis for that one iconic tower that’s needed to complete the skyline. It only needs one, just the one to stand out above the boxes which will all contribute to the mass.

But we do need that one otherwise the skyline is just too bland and generic.

Manchester has been punching well below its weight ever since the Manchester Ship Canal was completed. ‘What Manchester does today, the rest of the world goes tomorrow’ (Benjamin Disraeli), ‘have you seen Manchester? Manchester is as great a human exploit as Athens’ (Benjamin Disraeli), ‘Certainly, Manchester is the most wonderful city of modern times’ (Benjamin Disraeli).

We are a city of historic world importance and deserve an iconic skyline to go with our name. I get it’s all about money but we should be aiming higher. One Angel Square is the best modern building in the country, better than anything in London… that’s the sort of class we should be looking at for that final piece of the jigsaw, but eye catching to the skyline from a distance.

For me though, again, much more importantly than getting the skyline the city name deserves, the streetscape is of most importance in the shorter term. It needs a total revamp across the city.

Never knew Disraeli was a smack head:-)

There’s been a bit of concern about Downing Livings First Street proposal. Mainly the appearance of the glass cladding. Other concerns being the overall look of the proposal, the blocks looking too similar, over development, etc. The poor (glass cladding) CGI’s hasn’t helped either. If you look at the CGI’s closely and for too long they begin to hurt your eyes.

Thankfully the glass cladding looks pretty good in real life.

Embankment Exchange - Greengate - 36/14 stories

This development/tower has been stalled for many months. The previous developer ran Into problems. The development has been taken over by a new property developer.

Construction workers are now back onsite pouring concrete.

Below is the new and emerging St John’s/Enterprise City district. It includes the old Granada Studios. A mixture of residential, offices, leisure, Factory International, etc. The property developer is Allied London.

The tower under construction is Union Living - 32 stories. Another and similar tower next it is also under construction. That will be 36 stories.

The tower behind Union Living is Novella - 23 stories, which has recently been completed. Phase 2, Plot C - 23 stories has recently received planning permission.

Going to stick to the changing skyline and towers otherwise I’ll be on here all day posting about the property developments happening in Manchester.

But every now and again I’m going to post something different.

I like office blocks. :-) Over the last few year lots of office blocks have been built in the city centre. The vast majority are really good looking.(as office blocks go)

A couple of my favourites at the moment are 4 New Bailey - 10 stories - New Bailey. Pre-let to and built for BT.

The cladding is superb.

Another cracker.

Eden - 15 stories - New Bailey

Covering over 3,000m² of the façade with more than 350,000 plants of 32 different species, we are on the way to completing the second largest living wall in the world (the first we completed in Qatar in 2018, named Khalifa Avenue). Located in the heart of Manchester, a seemingly small patch of land in the cultural hub of Salford is being transformed into a 15-storey office building, which will set the sustainable building agenda for years to come.

Live Views. (does update eventually)

Unfortunately you can only post 5 pictures per post, so the pictures will be posted in the next post. Perhaps something for Ric to look at and change?

Yesterday(last week), I had an amazing opportunity to visit Eden at New Bailey construction site in Manchester city centre.

The New Bailey project features what is being billed as Europe’s largest living wall and most sustainable office space in the UK.

Thank you Emmanuel Afranie (Msc. PLSCM) and Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd for making this happen!

I've withdrawn my offer - no way could I sleep in a place held to gether by a) Plants , but moreover, b) Sellotape!

Superb pic's in this thread, as always though. Thanks for starting it.

No probs. :-) Should have started it a long time ago.

I’m always trawling LInkedin, Twitter, Instagram, etc for skyline, tower, construction, etc pictures.(drone videos)

I do a monthly city centre construction roundup. Or as much of the city centre that I can get around in one day. The next city centre construction roundup is due later this month. I’ll post the pictures on the thread.
