Firstly, Zabaleta is fit, so I don't know why people are saying we should start Maffeo. At least play zaba for 70 mins and sub him on depending on what the result is like? Do the same against Saints the week after as well. But Barca away isn't a game where you blood youngsters.

IMO play your strongest starting 11 for EVERY game. Re-evaluate before each match, but don't plan in advance... your next game is your most important etc etc.

Many including myself simply don't believe Zabaleta is in a strongest xi. Many, again including myself have no idea who could fill in or make right back their own. Some suggesting Navas, some Maffeo some Fernandinho. I personally haven't got a clue.
However I'm sad to say that Zabaleta has looked way off the pace and looks a defensive liability.

I don't think fans are looking to rest or rotate him, but replace him. He's been an outstanding player for the club, for the fans but he's looked woeful for two seasons now when put under any defensive pressure. His physical limitations see him offer his man far too much space as he can't match even a adequate winger for acceleration. He struggled like mad at Celtic.
Last season many fans blamed Pellegrini's rigid tactics, fair enough, questions were there to be asked, but we now have a tactical magician and Zabaleta has looked worse.
Age waits for no man, especially one who's put his body through as much as any player I can remember for the shirt.

Everton up next, two quick and direct wingers with overlapping full backs, I personally don't think Zabs is up to it. I'd be delighted to be wrong though.

For me.

.................Bravo.............
JN/Maffeo Otamendi Stones Kolarov.
..............Fernandinho...............
......Silva..............Gundogan......
Sterling.....................Nolito......
.............Aguero...................

I would hope Kolarov would get back to where he was in a more settled team.
Perhaps use Iheanacho depending on Aguero's fitness.

Certainly use Clichy vs Barcelona.

Kolarov v Bolasie
I fucking hope not

Really looking forward to this game after what seems like an age without proper football.

I hope the players are just as hungry and are fully focussed. Everton is the sandwich in internationals and Barcelona.

Bravo

Maffeo - Stones - Otamendi - Clichy

Fernandinho

Gundögan - Silva

Sané - Iheanacho - Nolito
Agüero, De Bruyne and Sterling on off the bench to get some minutes before Barça.

I agree, but I think axing him Saturday after two horror shows could irrepably damage his confidence and there's no way he can mark Messi in the week.

I'd rather watch Angelino mark Bolasie or Messi than Kolarov, ones a complete unknown (in terms of how he will handle it) and ones a complete liability. At least Angelino would have the pace, Clichy is also better than Kolarov and I would be fine with him starting too. However, our starting spots at full back need a revamp. Like I mentioned earlier in the week, I think we're finally at the point where the youth have to be given a chance, Garcia, Maffeo and Angelino all knocking on the door for starts imo.

I don't agree with this. Surely we should play our strongest xi in the Prem?, We are not going to win the CL so why mess with the team?

yep!! premier league over champions league at the minute for me! need to get that title back!!

Fully agree. Full backs were highly in need of replacement.
Clichy is fine for me. Solid defensively, committed, desperate for a new deal. Improving offensively under Pep.
The two young full backs deserved a chance, how could they be worse?

Garcia seems to have a much better understanding of what Pep wants than Fernando yet we keep seeing him.

Aguero could do with a rest after playing 2 games for Argentina. Kelechi has proved he is capable. De Bruyne isn't ready yet and Sterling has had a knock recently. Maffeo can't be any more of a liability than Zabaleta at the moment. I think it's time to give him a chance.

Apart from that I think this is our strongest available XI.

Ah. Who did they play last? I know they didn't win as it ruined my acca.

They drew 1-1 with Palace, but lost 2-0 at home to Norwich in the League Cup recently too. Not sure if they played a full strength team though.

The MEN have said that De Bruyne and Kompany have trained this week, which is good news. Not sure if the Everton game comes too soon for them, but it'd be a bonus to have them available again with 7 games in the next 21 days.

Need to bounce back. Everton are no mugs with some good players. Baines and Coleman are good on the ball and at getting forward. I always worry about teams with pace/ball laying wingbacks, as Pep's high pressing game demands a lot from our wing backs, and thier lack of pace can be exposed.

Also worried about Lakuku. Stones and Otamendi might not be physical enough to handle him. We need Vinny back yesterday!!

Hopefully Lukaku won't be available. He suffered a thigh injury playing for Belgium.
