Manchester City's Fernandinho: Liverpool crowd won't scare me - I've had much worse in South America

Fernandinho has been pelted with sticks and stones at some of the world’s most hostile stadiums.

The Brazilian midfielder also recalls playing in Colombia in the aftermath of an earthquake.

And when his first season in the Ukraine came to a climax – with a winner-takes-all title showdown – it was Fernandinho’s Shakhtar Donetsk that emerged victorious against Dynamo Kiev.

So, when it was put to him that Manchester City’s players could be paralysed by an emotionally-charged Anfield on Sunday, he flashed a look that only emphasised an answer loaded with disdain.

“Liverpool have obviously never played in the Copa Libertadores,” said Fernandinho. “When you play in the Copa Libertadores and you go to Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Ecuador, as you approach the stadium, you get attacked from all sides with stones, sticks and wooden posts. That’s a bit different.

“When I was in Brazil once, we went to play a game against Vasco Da Gama in Rio De Janeiro. The access to the stadium was a very tight road, just enough for a vehicle to go down and we got a huge stone thrown through the window of our bus.

“The police would not allow us to warm up on the pitch. We had to warm up in a cement area, I think it was an old cinema or something like that.

"They did all sorts of tricks, but we still played the game – and, most importantly, we won the match. It was a very important game for us.

“It will be the same when we go to Liverpool. We will be focused enough not to be affected by outside events.”

Fernandinho added: “When you play the Copa Libertadores, you get these things everywhere, in every country.

“For example, in Bolivia, you land at an airport that is on top of a mountain and you spend three or four hours travelling to the city to play the match.

“I played one Copa Libertadores game in Colombia when, just two or three days before, there had been an earthquake, so you can imagine what impact that had on the players’ state of mind.

"It sounds crazy, but South America is like that, more or less everywhere. But these things do happen and, for me, they only create more motivation.

Red army: Liverpool fans will try to be a 12th man in Sunday's massive match

“The City team is old enough, prepared enough and experienced enough to know how to deal with the situation at Liverpool.

“If you are properly prepared, you can block everything from the outside. It will not affect our performance.”

Liverpool’s bid for the title, in a season when the club will honour the 96 fans killed at Hillsborough 25 years ago, has made a traditionally tough trip to Anfield even harder for City boss Manuel Pellegrini (and his Blues.

Fernandinho has been in England for less than a season, but he already understands the significance of the tragic events of April 15, 1989.

“What happened at Hillsborough is well known back in Brazil,” he said. “Also, a person I am close to, who lived in the UK, spoke to me about what happened and, thankfully, things have improved a lot, with regard to the security and safety of the fans.

“I read an article by a Brazilian journalist about how stadia here have been improved and he wants the same progress to take place in Brazil because we have also had tragedies at football matches.

“There have been a few terrible incidents in Brazil, but I have to say the difference over there is that here the people are strong enough to make sure it never happens again.

“In Brazil, the problems never get dealt with.”

Fernandinho won six titles in eight years in Ukraine before arriving at City for £30million last summer. He admitted: “Winning the Premier League would be bigger than all of them.”

The 28-year-old then recalled the first title he won with Shakhtar, after an amazing last-day showdown with Dynamo which has echoes of City’s trip to Merseyside.

Fernandinho, who was speaking at the launch of the EA SPORTS 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil demo, added: “There was a lot of pressure going into the game, but it mobilised everyone in our team.

“In a similar way, I think this game against Liverpool will be the most important game of the season – for both teams.

“We have seven games left and, if we win them all, we will be champions.

“If we beat Liverpool, we will leave one of our rivals behind us – so it is important.”

Is it true that overweight brain dead lumux Richards has injured Vinnie in training?
This is utterly disrespectful to a loyal City player and a good guy. You wouldn't say it to his face and both MIcah and VK would teach you a lesson if you tried.
+1
Some of the utter shite aimed at Richards in this forum is beyond belief.he challenged kompany in the air for a header to which kompany landed awkwardly.how the fuck is that micahs fault.
And for all of the flappers.....kompany will play the full game tomorow through sheer determination cos that's the kind of professional he is.and that's why we love him.

What a character Fernandinho is to have in that dressing room!! He's going to be a key player for us tomorrow and hopefully he'll give Yaya the platform to get forward and make or score a couple of goals.

Most of these scousers are forgetting we have players of the highest pedigree in our squad who won't be fazed over one chant of you'll never walk alone.

Interesting betting angle to this match. The last time City were not fav's for a premiership game was
23rd Oct 2011. Can we guess what happened that day.

Well irrespective of whether that game was last time we were fav's or not the build up to this game has been similar to the heat that was turned up for the derby on 23rd October 2011. You couldn't move for quotes from ex ManU players and pundits alike that ManU were a proper team and how winning was in their DNA and all topped off with that epic interview with Mark Hughes holding court in his newly extended QPR office and nursing that giant chip on his shoulder.

And we all now how that game turned out don't we kids?

Here's hoping for more of the same tomorrow.

Goodnight and God bless.

I think because we can play for a draw and still have the league in our own hands I would go with three in midfield and play Garcia, Fernandinho and Yaya.

Having Garcia and Fernandinho as a reserve it will allow Yaya to be completely free to be instrumental in the attacking third.

I fear if we go with two in midfield he will be forced deeper and no doubtRodgers will pin point Yaya as our key man who starts most of our attacks and he will have him pressed to death as soon as he receives the ball, therefore I would have him given more of a free role forcing Liverpool to question what they should do with him.

I reckon Manuel will go:

Hart

Zab Kompany MDM Kolarov

Navas Silva Fern Yaya Nasri

Aguero

(If Kompany is out, he'll put Lescott there)

Good enough to 'control' the game, width width width and very counter attack minded.
