Yes and I only found out last week ... apparently retired so I`ve heard.
That's a shame.

I know a few people moaned about him but I always found Stuart to be fair and reasonable in his coverage of City. Seemed like a genuinely nice bloke as well.

Cancelo's been criminally underrated on here. Same as Gundogan before 2021 and Rodri before 21/22.

Compare Cancelo's and Cucu's defensive stats and tell me how Cucu is supposed to be the better defender (for a high-pressing Pep system anyway). Plus Robertson's stats:

Take a key defensive stat such as interceptions: Cancelo 59, Cucurella 30, Robertson 23 (!).

Or successful 50/50s: Cancelo 56, Cucurella 28, Robertson 13(!)

Or aerial battles won: Cancelo 57, Cucurella 40, Robertson 26 (!)

And the comparison of defensive stats may not be fair to Cancelo because Brighton do a lot more defensive work than City due to having a lot less possession than City.
Rather than stats I look at stuff like where cancelo got wrong side of attacker to let Villa score that header.
I know we won the game but it could have been so different.
Great player as he is he can’t be classed as a solid full back.
We need a specialist LB in certain games

I fought in his corner for many years on this forum. He gave us so many positives but also wasn`t afraid to also say if he didn`t agree with any of City policies.
He certainly gave both barrels to the Board over their stance in the proposed ESL and rightly so.
No, a very fine writer IMO.

Can Walker be classed WC defensively? Coz I can give you a list of games where similar happened to him, or Dias or Laporte.

Not Stones though. He is surely World Class. :)

I'd be curious to know how many of those games Cancelo was playing at LB. Getting caught wrong side then having to track back and make a defensive move with your off foot is as difficult if not more difficult than making a play with the ball on your off foot.

Every player makes mistakes including the greatest defenders ever. You can't say, oh, but he made this and that mistake, hence he's not good enough. That's not serious mate.

No I mean found out like we did in the CL semi last season when fernandinho (our 37 year old defensive midfielder) had to fit in at full back against one of the best wingers in the world - and did terribly.

The same will happen this year also - injuries are part of the game and when we are going for all four trophies again and have a game every 3/4 days for weeks on end, it catches up with you.
As long as we keep winning the league every year i couldn't give a toss about the uefa corrupt bastards trophy

Probably get slated for this but it’s time to have a real conversation about 93:20blue, I understand people get stuff wrong but what has he actually got right? Neymar signing, “Cucuarella signed”, “Pep signed” and if you go back there’s so many misses. Not having a go at the lad but all I’m saying is in future he really isn’t a top source for me, there’s a lot lot more wrongs then rights and I can say that without being rude or anything just a fact.
Why do we need a conversation about him? If you are unhappy with his contribution, the simply ignore it

That was just one example. Cancelo can be world class one game and stink the place out in another. Gives the ball away a lot trying the difficult pass. When it comes off it’s great.
Personally imo I would prefer solid full backs when playing against the top teams in league and Europe

If only its as easy as you think it is to find a "solid full back".

From the outside looking in (thanks for having us BHA fans here by the way) there's still one thing I don't understand about this whole saga.

Having read much of this thread, a few things seem clear. You need a new LB/LWB, ideally a left footer, Cancelo very good in that position but can struggle defensively in the big games, you're a very well run club, great scouting, you don't need nor want to take risks in signings, Cucu has been your priority, Pep wants him, you've made profits on player sales this summer, and you don't value him much more than £30-40m. None of which I have reason to dispute.

The question then is WHY was Cucu your first choice? You're Man City, the best team in the country, one of the best in the world, with major ambition to win the Champions League. You have a squad full of players worth in excess of £50m. So why was your top target for the critical LB position, where you have a clear need, and selected by your scouting dept and manager, just a player worth no more than 30-40m? You'd be picking sides with global superstars 1 to 11, except for the average floppy haired guy on the left.

I find that hard to reconcile. It's not a dig, just doesn't quite add up.

If that was true, it would show in his stats over the season. If you are great one game and shit another, if you are inconsistent that is, your overall stats will be average. Cancelo's defensive stats are better than Robertson's, much better. Best LB in the league last season, and it wasn't very close, either.

He was averaging a goal or assist every 150minutes mid way into the season he left. 30 goals and 15 assists the season before. Pep had managed him before and would of bought him if United didn't offer bigger wages and a player in exchange. Alexis said he regretted moving to United after the first training session. Wenger and Guardiola get much more out of attacking talent than Mourinho.
He was done, end of story.

Agreed, big loss imo, how many of the current “journalists” and media types would have the courage of their convictions and come on here and defend what they’d put into print ? I bet you could write the names on an ants left bollock.

Enjoy your retirement Stuart if you still read these pages, it was a pleasure.
