I agree with all that you say here, and that is the flip side to the coin. When it is not harnessed then it invariably seems to default to being a force for evil. That is the key I guess, finding a way to manage it.

But without it, there would not be anything like the range of treatments on offer of that I am sure.
So what you are saying is due to capitalism, huge breakthroughs in medicine have been achieved that nobody can afford ? Of course, though, America can, through the individual paying for it personally-if you can personally afford it, if
not-oh well

No what I am saying, as I suspect you already know, is that in terms of creative impetus capitalism in the form of the profit motive is the best system to deliver advances in medical science.

What I am also saying is that using capitalism to distribute those drugs is patently not the best or fairest system. The system we currently have, in the NHS, is perfect for this.

All I am saying is that people who denigrate capitalism ignore the benefits that it has conferred on mankind. Do you think the internet would be the wonderful tool it is today without capitalism? I don't.

And thanks for the banjo comment. It did make me laugh ;)

I know, teasing a little ;).
Problem is NHS (via NICE) can't afford a lot of these medicines so people are forced into private health/insurance. There are sections of the US populace that can't afford either and therefore go totally untreated even for something like a tetanus jab, which we would take for granted.
It's slow privatisation via the back door. Ukelele ! LOl ;)

I didn't mention socialism, but yes they are both good and bad. It's finding the balance between the two that is the key I guess.

-- Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:35 pm --

Well it is a national disgrace that an organisation the size of the NHS cannot afford drugs that private institutions can.

WOW what a legend!!

Take the mick all you like, but while some of us were out on the streets doing something we believe in: protesting about a rotten government with no mandate to govern what were you doing that was so worthwhile? Lounging around at home with your finger up your arse?
No I was earning some money to support my family.

And what's wrong with lounging round the house with your finger up your arse anyway?
