It is self evident that the top 4 and beyond is the target. But if my target is to pull Miss World and I end up with the lass who came second, it's not exactly a failure. The point about a top 6 finish is that it would demonstrate a satisfactory degree of progress - especially if combined with a Wembley appearance or (dream the dream) a trophy...

What I can give you is evidence.

In every interview with every player which has taken place, either when they joined or since, they talk about the Top 4.

There is no way players like Tevez and Barry have joined us to play in the Europa league. They have all been sold a vision and that is Champions League and beyond. You don't spend £200m at a time when noone else is spending and all the big boys are going backwards to finish 6th.

The squad we have is as good as several of the traditional top 4. It would be ludicrous to settle for 6th place with that squad.

We were 8th 2 seasons ago. And the top 4 have arguably gone backwards since then.

£200m for 2 places? That would be a disaster.

If that's true then surely we're gonna see big spending this january as it's touch and go at best whether this current crop of players can reach the top four.

I can prove that the target set by our owners for this season is top six because they have put that in the public domain.

It is obvious to a five year old what the ultimate target is for the seasons to come.
