Martín Zubimendi

A lot of this speculation has been driven by an unforeseen circumstance of 2 of the best midfielders to have ever played in the premier league being long term injured.

If they weren't injured there would be no discussion to have.

There would still be a discussion to have because of Kevin's advanced age. Rodri obviously still is in his prime.

That discussion wouldn't be happening now though, and those players if they were any good would have moved to a different club by then.

It’s certainly brought it into sharper focus, true, but the speculation/discussion has been ongoing for seasons now and will only continue. We dropped 100 million on central midfielders incapable of filling the position, let young talent leave, and reaccommodated a player whose best years were behind him. Even if de Bruyne and Rodri (impossible, I know) were to return in January, the experience of the last few weeks means we will need to move into the market, probably next summer. Guardiola has acknowledged that even when Rodri does return, his specific injury and lengthy layoff will affect his body and likely see him pick up further injuries, so it would be folly to go into 2025-2026 reliant on the same players and tempt the same fate.

He's not playing for Barsley or Middlesbrough. He's a mainstay for his home town club in a metropolitan area that has one of the best standards of living in Western Europe. And getting paid 3 million. Euros.

No reason to move if when you are comfortable unless a superclub wants to buy you.

The Stadium and outside of it are a bit of dump, light years behind the new San Mames.

Easy to say that when our core midfielder two years ago still working as intended, you can't just buy these player and expect it will hitting ground immediately like your core players in their first season.

Also none of them wanted to have less playing time if they can get it and being main start with other top team elsewhere.
Yes this is the problem. Our recent midfield signings have been squad players rather than level raisers

Nunes/Kovacic/Philips have not stepped up to the level of Prime Gundo/Ferna/Rodri

Yes, in fact they’ve overseen the rapid decline of our midfield.

But we don't know the reasons for allowing , your thinking , this to happen.

I don't believe the club to be reactive in their approach/ planning ,so I believe they were thinking in a non-obvious way..

Which is why both you and I are only speculating due to
our lack of inside knowledge or certainty.

Of course you could be a management insider ?
