He plays because he's like ten thousand times better on the ball than Lescott. Our system relies on the CB to pick penetrating passes and be put under pressure. JL really looks overwhelmed when he plays in this regard. I think it's easy to see why the manager prefers him, he's terrified of JL being put under pressure and giving away 1 on 1s with the keeper.

That said, MDM is making more mistakes than JL would likely make with the ball, so I think it's obvious the manager needs Nastasic to get healthy or JL to play more and live with his faults. Demichelis is still pretty tidy with the ball and probably doesn't get enough credit from our fans for his ability to distribute, but there's no sense in playing a defender for his distribution if he's going to give away goals/pens and earn cards.

Incidentally, this is probably why MDM was playing as a CDM instead of Garcia. Garcia doesn't have the range or variety of pass that MDM has. Unfortunately, MDM's lack of pace is also a letdown for him in htis position. I don't bring this up to criticize Garcia...more just that I think it demonstrates that the manager really seems to value this trait. Rightly so, imo, in that I think a lot of the reason why we've been more fluid in attack this year has been that we've asked our centre defenders to be more adventurous in the pass.
Nonsense. He played CDM becuase Garcia was injured and after his performance, I very much doubt we'll see that again.

I still think Garcia and possibly even Fernandinho would have been in trouble that night. Demichelis never had a chance, hugely outnumbered by a midfield that was working their balls off and absolutely on fire. I don't rate Demichelis but I do think he is better in midfield than in defence and think judging him there on that match is harsh. He played there two or three times and looked ok. Let's put it this way, if all players were judged on one match, Garcia would never have played again after Wigan away last season which was as bad a performance as I've seen from a City player in recent years.

Two footballing worlds collide when it come's to DM. In England we seem to like the no nonsense, tough in the tackle and oof it out type. In Most of Europe and South America they would rather have a footballer to start the quick breaks.. and always be on the front foot.

Pellegrinis System isnt really all that geared up towards being a solid defensive unit like Mancini, and that is the compramise you make when playing atractive free flowing football. Unless everyone in the team is 100% focused on reading the game you will get times when the two centre backs are made to look silly. That being said, the guy has always stood out for his galring lack of pace, in other leauges this would be less of an issue. In the premier leauge however, the games is played so fast he just physicaly cant keep up at time's, although that let's his poor positioning of the hook to easily.

when all is said and done, it's a very experienced manager who is really showing his flaws in all this, unable to compramise from his total football method, even when the problem is glaringly obvious. Thats what concerns me more, rather than play a guy who can actually defend, he will put in a guy with a lenthy record of being a liability because he can pass better..

People talk about his lack of pace but there are plenty of decent defenders about who aren't quick, it's his decision making that is the problem imo.

There is no defending the managers decision to play this player in place ofLescott. Lescott may look and be clumsy but he can defend , which surprisingly is a defenders job. If he can pass like a midfielder then great. If we don't concede ,then we don't have to keep scoring lots of goals to win a game. And what must Milner think when a centre back plays in midfield before him?

I agree, i said that in the post.

His starting position is quite poor and leaves him with the only option of jumping in. Knomapny's greatest asset imo, is how good he is at reading the game, that always leaves him tight to his man.

MDMs decision making on defense is bad. Consistently a worry when he's on the pitch. However, the one thing that was supposed to be his strong suit is his passing ability. I don't know if the statistics exist, but I swear that no City player has more turnovers than MDM. The guy gets the ball and promptly kicks it straight out to the opposition who then regather and start the attack again. Generally we fair ok when he does this, as the break is over by that point which is where his defense is generally not good.

MDMs distribution was poor yesterday but I thought it was a feature of our play yesterday that Garcia refused to take any responsibility and consistently rolled the ball to Lescott or MDM to distribute it.

All this debate is very interesting, but I see it a little more simply.

MD was a very good player in his time, but is now not, and it's amazing we have to be reliant on him.

Lescott is solid, but cannot distribute the way we seem to want to play.

Nasty is still young, but seems to be having a crisis of confidence.

We failed, when we never bought a world class CB in January.

We could put out 10 players that could match any team, but not 11 unfortunately.
