Mary D's

I’m blaming the ale. It was so cheap in there. Only time I’ve played pool with a bloke wearing a light brown leather jacket with green velvet trousers.

And we always called it the Steelworkers and nobody ever corrected us!
I guess the earliest locals when it opened were steel workers and maybe it’s a nickname for the pub. I’ll get my missus to ask some locals in her pub tonight if they ever go in there

Steelworks Tavern and The Vulcan are separate pubs and both still standing.

(Just back from Brentford, absolutely buzzing, hence the ridiculous time of this post. CTID.).
The Vulcan is definitely a rags' refuge these days judging by the shit flag draped across the gable end

Monroe’s used to be. Michael ran it brilliantly, members only on match day.
He left just before lockdown and it was purchased by a gay couple who’ve turned it into a Gin specialist place and renamed it (Piccadilly Central I think) They won’t show any football and stopped the members thing. They also refused to open “early” for any of the 12:30pm ko.
Their prerogative as owners but a shame nonetheless as Monroe’s was perfect.

To be fair to the new guys, they’ve no problem with City fans going in there on match days. Quite a lot still do.

They were also planning on getting Sky/ TNT for the games but Michael had a special deal with them going back to the disruption when they were building the hotel all around the pub. The new guys said they were happy to take over that deal. But were told that deal was specific to Michael and they’d have to pay the full rate. I forget the amount they were quoted. But it was eye watering and they just didn’t feel they’d get it back in beer sales.

They’re nice enough guys and it’s still a decent enough pub. But agreed it’s not the same without Michael and even more so, his lovely wife Deborah ( RIP )

Think it’s about £20k a year for a pub to have Sky and TNT Sports.

Cheers pal; I think Michael was genuinely one of a kind. Really sad he and Debs never got to enjoy retirement together.

I know quite a lot of fans still go in on match day but it’s not for me in its current set up.

Used to absolutely love it in there; like home from home and never an ounce of mither. I think Michael used to take great pride in how few people he let in!

And there aren’t many boozers where you can go and make yourself a cup of tea en route to the toilet!

The 'Corner Shop' is decent on match days but sometimes can be a nightmare to get served, plus it has a good size outdoor area to drink when the weathers good.

It used to be based on the rateable value of the pub. Don’t know if that’s even a thing anymore.

But I’m guessing that a big pub in a city centre will still probably be paying a lot more than a shitty back street boozer out in the sticks.

It’s still a ridiculously high price.
Grew up in a pub in the mid to late 90s, it was £500 ish per month, they came and checked how many seats you had and based it on that back then.
They also had people checking for dodgy subscriptions / domestic subs shown in a pub.
A mate of my dad's got fined £700 for showing his domestic sub in the pub.
It's always been extortionate, no wonder people jump ship to IPTV especially as it so easy to set up and obtain these days.

Is that any way to describe Mary D's???
It's hardly "out in the sticks"!!

Miserable buggers, I always like popping into Mary Ds for a pint and singsong pre-game. Watched the Real Mardrid game there as couldn’t get a ticket for the ground, it was absolutely bouncing, great night

It’s a hellhole plastic pint cups, shit beer, stinks & the toilets are rank. Place to be if you want a sing song though

Tend to drink around Swan St, Ancoats or Oldham St before the game then jump an uber last minute.

Afterwards walk back up to Cloudwater/Track or Diecast.

Love the Vine and City Arms but its a shambles getting to the game from that part of town.

If you don’t mind leaving it until last minute like me, once the crowds have died down, you can jump on a tram virtually outside the Vine/ City and be there in 15 minutes.

What time would you get the Tram for say a 3pm game then? They hammered or died down by then?

We were in the before the Palace game and got an Uber about 20 to and missed 10 mins or so of the game.

They’re cracking pubs.
