They don't. It has deepened the irrationality of the market. The prohibition has increased costs, exacerbated the proliferation of third parties, and increased opportunities for graft. It has had precisely the opposite effect intended (at least what was publicly stated). It has failed of its essential purpose, as has the EPL etc. when it was claimed it would increase the talent-pool available for the national team. Has it? No. They lie. Just like FFP is a lie. They are not simply making mistakes. If it was simply a matter of incompetence they'd sometimes get it right.

I've not logged in here for a very long time. But I have now because I wanted to commend the excellence of this person's contribution. Hurrah to you.

Think you're being incredibly harsh there mate! Last season he got 25 goals and 30 assists in 64 games, responsible for almost a goal a game in some form. He's only on the fringes now because of Mourinho, who I'd agree with Lancet intended to do that before he'd even walked through the door. A player who scores and creates that many goals has got to be worth 30 million of anyones money.

How many of these "assists" and goals led to anything meaningful ? Because I remember them knocked out of th CL (Behind Shakhtar not Madrid).. I also seem to remember us ripping them apart on almost every game.

I didn't see them challenging for title... Mata is a very talented player but his tactical & deffensive weaknesses make him a player nowhere near the level that a PL winning squad needs in their starting line up.

There were all sorts of reasons why they haven't challenged for the league for a few years but personally I really don't think Mata was one of those reasons. Wasn't he part of their Champions League winning team?

I wouldn't have a transfer window so that transfers can happen at any time but with one restriction. After 15 league games, no transfers would be allowed until after the season end.

Also, loanees should be allowed to play against their home club.

Lastly, any player who has featured in any capacity and in more than 7 games for any club cannot be sold within the season to another club in the same league.

Well he's won the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions league whilst he's been there, so nothing big I suppose, but I get your point. I understand why he's been dropped, but would we suddenly not challenge for the title if we swapped him with Silva or Nasri? I doubt it. He's been in a largely mish mash Chelsea side and still has two honours to his name that none of our squad do (at City at least).

Erm ... we're still waiting!!!

They are probably waiting to announce the signing just before their FA Cup 4th round match just to give everyone at old trafford a boost. Oh, wait a minute...

What do you make of Juan Mata's move to Manchester United?

Pellegrini: I think Juan Mata is a very good player.

It is a shame he didn't play often this year at Chelsea. I think United buy a very good player.

Personally I don’t agree that the player can go from one team to another team in the same league at this part of the year but rules are rules and he can change clubs.

Why not?

Pellegrini: Because I think if a player plays for a club for more than half of the season, a club with money can take the best players from the other teams. The rules allow, so nothing to say.

I'm surprised that no-one appears to have noted the heavy irony (aided by the deadpan delivery) of this splendid bombshell sentence. Chelsea a selling club? Mourinho selling his best player? United the club with the tradition of developing its own, young, British talent reduced to the unheard of obscenity of doing what those dreadful parvenus from the Etihad do? But the rules (who wanted them?!) allow it....
