Matija Nastasic

Been impressed as well so far but still some slackness needs ironed out. Twice last night he got caught on the goal line, first time trying to usher out a ball that was not going out and then he got caught out again in the same position near the end. Obviously a far better player than Savic mind, far better on the ball and stronger.

New City defensive kingpin Matija Nastasic has urged his team-mates to make it a white-out Christmas for their opponents.

City made it five clean sheets in their last six Premier League games with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Wigan last night, with Nastasic in superb form.

The composed 19-year-old defender has been a key part of the Blues’ strong run in the Premier League – they have let in just one goal since he established himself as Vincent Kompany’s defensive partner.

But for the composed Serbia international, that is one goal too many.

He said: "Everything is going well for us. In the last six games we have only conceded one goal – now we need to keep it going, but this time make it no goals."

The Blues’ much-improved defence has been key to their pursuit of United at the top, and City are heading for the derby a week on Sunday in fine form at the back.

Nastasic has settled incredibly well for such a young player, and he gives the credit for that to the influence of Kompany.

"We talk every day on the pitch and on the training ground, and it makes me happy to play alongside such an excellent captain and in such a good team. Whatever I am learning, I am learning along with Vinny," said the youngster, whose transfer fee of £12m plus Stefan Savic is looking like one of the bargains of the summer.

I just love his indifference, the confidence in his own ability.

Being a central defender takes you the best part of years to learn, and he is way ahead of the curve at 19.

He's going to make some absolute howlers, in the years to come, but it will help him become one of the best in the world.

It's still early days, Matija needs to develop much more in order to become world class defender. New team/country/language/lifestyle are all factors that need to be considered, sure, things are going great now, but, what happens if he has couple of poor performances?

He's already made mistakes in most of the games, but he has a fantastic attitude and quickly moves on rather than dwelling on them. For a 19 year old playing in such a key position, you have to give the kid credit don't you? He's in our team on merit.

Huge credit, how many 19 year old centre halves are playing regularly in the Prem (or any other division). And yes he is there on merit, moving smoothly from covering Lescotts place in the event of injury/suspension to holding down the position as his own.

Our centre back pairings in the league so far:

Pairing_______________Played___Conceded___Clean Sheets
Nastasic & Kompany_______7_________2____________5
Lescott & Kompany________5_________6____________0
Kompany & Kolo T_________1_________2____________0
Lescott & Richards________1_________0____________1

And one of Nastasic & Kompany's goals conceded was that shocking penalty decision at Fulham.

The big test will be when he hits a poor run of bad luck/form. We'll see how he recovers. So far he seems confident enough in his own ability to pull out of it. Rotation may be a problem for him too but he seems mentally strong enough to cope. If he handles these aspects of his time at City well, we'll have a very special player on our hands.
