I'm sorry, but do you honestly think no one had noticed how utterly disgraceful Yaya's defensive "efforts" had been in the game until after the game and Carragher mentioned it? Because there is no helping you if you do. Either that or a lot of us can see the future, as I'll guarantee you that I wasn't the only one yelling at my TV while Yaya slowed down, then stopped after players broke past him.

No, Arsenal played quite cautiously for 30 mins, we had more possession and more territory but we did nothing to threaten their goal until the KdB/Silva counter attack followed by Arsenal scoring with their first meaningful attacks, in the course of which Yaya was completely bypassed as per usual when he plays in a midfield two. It's not all Yaya's fault, some blame has to go to Pellegrini for the way we set up but we didn't control the game in the sense that you imply or we would have won it.

But the possession was meaningless passes in triangles deep in our own half. Nothing penetrating or pushing arsenal onto the back foot, just the same predictable, safe balls that we see week after week. He can play them all night when he's not pressed, which if you were watching you'd have noticed he wasn't. Arsenal were more than happy to sit back and let us top the possession stats.
The problem I have with him is he's a liability without the ball. He allows runners to jog past him time and time again without mustering even the pretence to be interested. He's nowhere near mobile enough anymore.
He is a magical footballer though and can do things others could only dream of. Unfortunately the positives are only papering over the negatives.

No I hadn't noticed it but then all players are in the team to perform different jobs. If you think Yaya is being picked to run back towards his own goal and break up the play then I would suggest there is no helping you either. Similarly, if you think Arsenal were bossing the game then there's no help for you.

I also wonder why Pellegrini, the coaching staff, Begiristain and those involved closely with the squad, coaching and team set-up (unlike Carragher) also don't seem to agree with you either ? If you think a 3 yard pass from Ozil somewhow proves Carraghers point then we may as well analyse every 3 yard pass in the game and look at players positioning.

You pays yer money you takes yer choice but I'll trust the 'experience' in our coaching staff as to what job they actually want Yaya to perform and whether he is doing it effectively - over a scouse defender with an axe to grind...

Of course Yaya came into his own as they tired and we chased the game but to expect him (or any player) to play like that for 90 minutes is fanciful in the extreme.

Sometimes a goal is simply down to great play from the opposition and Koscielny's pass into Walcott was a good one that bypassed all our players but somehow Carragher found a way to blame Yaya...

Sorry but we controlled the game right up until the goal, if anything it was relatively easy for us. Credit to Walcott, it was a great finish, and never a truer phrase than 'goals change games' For 15 minutes we lost our heads, none more so than Mangala, which was simply an awful pass. To then turn that into yet another 'anti-yaya' rant was nothing short of ridiculous based on how the game went. Pellegrini was absolutely right that the 2nd goal killed us but to that was nothing to do with Yaya.

It was a little OTT, but not that much. If anything, I think he just focussed on the obvious target, probably swayed by previous instances.

As had Arsenal up until the goal....but with even less of the ball.

That's true, but they were comfortable. City controlled the ball, but Arsenal weren't tested much.
They formed two nice lines and sat and watched as City played in front of them largely. It was only when there was some pace that Arsenal got out of shape - usually by getting round the right back.

I hate this "he's not there to defend" bollocks. Everyone is there to defend, it's a team game. No one player is allowed to just not bother tracking runners because they fancy saving their energy in case they might need it in the last 10 minutes, the game should have been dead by the time he decided to start running. They should have scored 2 or 3 goals in that second half by running off Yaya and it's the same every time he plays (or jogging, as running isn't really needed to escape someone who isn't even trying to catch you). If Yaya is doing exactly what the coaches want then they should be fired, as it's fucking criminal.
