and unlike me you were probably hugely outnumbered by rags.

I started Secondary School in 1975 and there were 9 City fans, 5 rags, 1 Liverpool, and 1 Derby County in my form.

Yeah its funny because I never really noticed it until I started secondary school. The part of Hyde I lived was a staunch blue area but going to school in another town you then noticed you were part of the minority. Late 80, early 90s we were struggling to match Oldham fans, who defected from supporting United.

Ironically when I started going out and to the local pubs there was a generation 3/5 years older than me who were predominantly blues. So it was back to having at least equal numbers, but definitely massively out numbering the reds for actual match going fans.

Yes I think mid 40s is the sweetspot for misery supporting City. Born the year of the league cup final and too young to remember the 81 final, all we had was a few crushing quarter final cup defeats up to our mid 30s.
I was born the day before the League Cup Final. Vaguely remember 81, and the tears. Was there for Pleat and more tears. Pretty much went down hill from there.

Least i can laugh about it now ;(

I was born 2 months after the 76 cup final. My dad went to the 81 final, and made sure my mum sat me in front if the tele, but I cannot sadly remember it.

Even relegation in 83, I cannot remember. But I have just got lost in my local woods today so Im clearly not the sharpest tool, which sort of explains me failing to remember David Pleat antics. 83/84 was my first match memory, Derek Parlane my first hero. But yes it was a long 30 years.

Our young fans were fantastic when we were losing at Newcastle and got us over the line v Spurs. We can still do it when we need to.

Yes not knocking them, it just seemed the whole ground was involved that day. Not just smaller sections and the ground seemed to have a much larger percentage of younger fans.

It was a pivotal moment. I went to York, Wrexham, but that Stoke match was a sea change. At least the second half. You are right that our support was at a peak during the rise with Keegan and Royle. But our away fans have been amazing since the 70s and can still compete with anyone in my view.

Funny how shit Manchester is for football. Only last season marca reporter and madrid players said our support was the loudest they had heard. Funny I don’t remember what the weather was like that night

Surely the sweetspot incorporates all the shite.

That is a very valid point. No doubt it resulted in the highs feeling that bit sweeter.

Funny though I would struggle to remember any quarter final victory on the way to our fa cup victories but I still regularly think about losing to Spurs in 93.

Completely agree about our away fans. The support has always been up there, both in terms of numbers and noise, with the very best. Bristol away in the cup last year was a case in point. There owns fans stated we had the best away following they had seen in 25 years.

I think its more a generational thing than unique to City. We talk about early leavers nowadays but in the 80s/90s the singing started on the terraces at 1:30pm for the big matches and especially if it was a big match like a derby/cup game etc. Nowadays there is so much choice and time seems more precious for people, not just football but in general life we don't allocate the same amount of time to things. I include myself in this.,
