Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

I get the feeling that Tom just enjoys winding people up on this subject. He loves to end his posts with a little snippet that will get a few more replies. Perfect example is 'if he keeps improving as he has we will have some player on our hands.' Funny, he says he rates Sterling for City yet ends with a comment like that knowing it will just stoke the flames. Now he's saying Sterling didnt get stick after the Iceland game. The same sterling who got absolutely ripped to pieces straight after for having a fancy sink in his house.

What would stoke flames, saying if he improves? Are you that deluded you think he is the finished article? Didn't get slated for his performance, sink gate and being held accountable for losing a match isn't the same thing.

He was labelled a flop, surely that is being held accountable by the media for losing? Many of the main mdeia outlets laid plenty of blame with Sterling for Englands performance, all you need to do is google it and its all there (i refuse to post links to the likes of the Sun).

As for him being the finished article, i have no doubts he can improve. Its the throw away comment about we will have some player if he improves. We already have 'some player on our hands' as you call it. You purposely say it in a way that suggests he has been average for us when in reality he has just come of the back of an incredible season where he was instrumental in us achieving what we did. Can he improve? Of course, but to make throw away suggestions that he didnt have an amazing season last season is just wrong.

He was slated for his performances in the Euros. Some of your points here are valid but that is just bullshit.

Tom I am not sure if you are being purposely stupid if you dont think Sterling didnt get criticised after Iceland for that was when the whole media circus went into meltdown

The issue is you and the media are holding the likes of Stones and Sterling up to higher standard because they played for Man City. The HUGE difference is that they are not playing for Man City but England and therefore you cannot judge them the same. The reason is as I have pointed out to you on numerous occasions is that football is a team game and it makes a huge difference to how an individual will perform if he is surrounded by players like Sane Silva KDB rather than Lingard Alli and Henderson therefore to suggest that they should perform the same is madness

Sterling makes runs into the box when playing for City knowing the quality players around him will get the ball to him he does that for England and more often than not the ball will be nowhere near. The problem is that with England many of the chances he creates he has to create himself as England do not have the players around him nor Stones that they are used to at a club level.

Thee problem is that the media seem to need potential scapegoats and in Stones and Sterling they are right in the firing line

That’s always been the case though. There’s always been a scapegoat when we on now countless occasions fuck up tournaments. High profile players at high profile clubs, and even in their heyday of conquering every single competition, I don’t think there has been a more high profile set of players at a more high profile club than ours and City. Even United.

I will never forgive the press for the euros. Sterling scored our only sodding goal and was our only bright spark. Kane did sod all, i mean fuck all and not a bloody dicky bird about him but Sterling was the devil. My red dad even noted he gets a hard time for no apparent reason.

As much as I agree that Sterling does get treated disproportionately badly by the press, there’s a fair bit of revising history going on too, or at the very least I’m not sure where people are reading to be labelling it so generally.

Rooney did get criticism after the Iceland game. Even the Daily Mail scored him less than they did Sterling. The bbc report of the game said this about Rooney (and Sterling) -

“Hart has had a nightmare tournament, young hopes such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli failed to live up to their performances last season, and captain Rooney, who had been England's best player up until this game, chose this night to give one of his worst performances in an international.”

“Hodgson's thinking had been muddled even before England arrived in France, with constant changes of personnel and approach exemplified by the sudden re-introduction - and subsequent substitution - of Raheem Sterling, although the Manchester City forward did win the penalty from which Rooney scored.”

Pre Iceland he was, he didn't perform well but neither did many players who were in much better form. This came to light and the Iceland game he got praised for doing some very basic stuff. Swayed the other way if anything.

So out of everyone it is just Stones and Sterling yes? I presume you are a sane adult? All i have seen today is Kane stories, how he wants to be top scorer, get a hatrick tonight. If that isn't being set up to fail then I don't know what is? Or do you miss that and see any city player story and have to swing it to make it look negative. If Sterling and Stones are bigged up it is rightly so after their seasons. If they bigged Phil Jones up we would cry media bias rather than suggest he is being set up to fail.
