Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

I'm just terrified he misses an opportunity in the semi or final.

We might well get up to Beckham levels of villainy "10 brave lions 1 stupid boy" burning shirts, hanging effigies etc.

If England don't win this tournament he will immediately be made the scapegoat unless he plays the perfect game, and even then there's a good chance he bears the brunt of the blame.

Luckily for England, the only game they lost was the one Raheem didn't play in. Where would they be now if he'd have played and won?

Good point scoring point.

Maybe ...after 335 pages, and after the general pundit/experts outpourings of the past 24hrs, the title of the thread needs to be changed to:
‘Armchairs, Hoddle and Tom persecution of Raheem Sterling’

Or alternatively, ' If you really can't see what this lad brings to the table, you need to get your fucking eyes checked'.

"If Rashford had been starting in Sterling’s place through this World Cup he’d be in contention for the golden boot by now and that is the problem with Sterling - not that he’s not good or not trying he’s just not the best man for that job"

Obviously based on his stunning total of 3 goals - 2 in friendlies and 1 in WC qualifier - over 2 years and 23 appearances. Some record that is!

Ive just been saying similar to the other half, its almost as if a memo has gone out across all outlets to start recognising and praising his contributions.

It would not be at all surprising if such a directive had gone out. Many of us are having to ask ourselves if Southgate has a much clearer and more perceptive view of what he's doing than we ever imagined possible. He has also spoken strongly in Raheem's favour and tried to explain just how "pivotal" he is to England. Persisting in the attack lays the attackers open to a triple whammy: they appear unpatriotic trying to stab a player in the back at such a critical time, they may appear stupid reiterating the same moans when the manager's approach is bringing unforeseen success and talk of Rashford already being in contention for the golden boot stabs England's Harry in the back and lumbers Rashford with expectations he hasn't got a chance of rising to if he replaces Raheem. Much safer to see what happens. If England win the world cup, bide your time but if we don't - the heroic efforts of "our lads" from England's historic clubs were sabotaged by a black boy who chased the money and, as soon as he got home, probably buggered of for a laugh and a bite of breakfast with his mates in Alderley Edge.

I think this comment must have been from Hoddle!

If Rashford was as good as he's made out to be he'd have wrapped up the golden boot with the gametime he's had.

Been arguing this on fb with various rags and two answers stand out.
He's been shit compared with how good he's been for City. We expect him to be a level above everyone else in the attack. Therefore although he's played as well as most of the oters if not better, we still say he's shit because he's not playing at a world class level

He’s playing out of position, therefore should be dropped for someone who actually plays that position cause my nan could have scored those goals...

I think its because the general public are beginning to realise that the media have a downer on him, they are trying to distance themselves from it so as not to be left holding the baby when everyone else starts backing him.

They forget that Rashford most probably wouldn't be in that position, in the first place.
