Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

I think the reception he got when he was subbed off was a turning point personally, almost everyone clapped him off and seemed to recognise he'd had a good game despite not scoring. I can't recall seeing that since he signed for City.

I think its because the general public are beginning to realise that the media have a downer on him, they are trying to distance themselves from it so as not to be left holding the baby when everyone else starts backing him.

I think the media - particularly the newspapers have wised up to the fact that the general public are starting to see through them and it is racism that is driving the criticism. Therefore a 180 degree handbrake turn needed to be executed and it has been in stunning fashion.

I must be an cynical old fart then because you two have a better impression of the general public than I do.

How have you come to that conclusion?

By the constant and sustained persecution of Sterling over a long period of time - particularly in the tabloid newspapers.
It's not just his football that gets torn apart. It's also his private life, his family and his character.
If not what other reason(s) can you give for it?

Well all the reasons you cite having nothing to do with racism.

Before the comp had began Hoddle and Le Tisser were both saying they would not have taken Sterling and they have continued that message, Interesting though is Southgate saying 2 weeks before naming his squad ` Rashford will be going with the u21 squad`. The change in attitude maybe down to a number of things, like Southgate using Sterling as Englands media outlet, it is going to be a bit hard to pull him down at the moment the stat that he has not scored may well go against him but all the others including being the English player to leave the pitch with his side in a winning position the most, or it could be all the media outlets have foreign commentators and all have praised Sterling, thus making the English look very inept at tactics

The stories that stood out for me as having an undercurrent of racism were the ones regarding him buying his mum a new house with expensive fittings. Do you really believe that if Harry Kane had done the same it would have been portrayed in such a negative light?

That possibly maybe the case.
However, I find it very interesting that even Gareth Southgate uses the word 'sinister' regarding the constant criticism of Sterling.
Sinister is defined as ' Giving the impression that something harmful or evil is happening or will happen'
Food for thought...
