I base it on the simple principle that penalties should be given for obstructing (unlawfully) a goal scoring opportunity. In this case, from what I remember, there was no way Otamendi would have got the ball even without the foul.
Ok. Just to make this clear. If a corner is taken, and a goalkeeper at the opposite end of the pitch in his own penalty area strikes an opponent, whilst the ball is in play, the goalkeeper should concede a penalty. My opinion was not based on the kind of foul, but about how far Otamendi was away from the ball.

Yes, where the offence took place. He’d probably be sent off too.Ok. Just to make this clear. If a corner is taken, and a goalkeeper at the opposite end of the pitch in his own penalty area strikes an opponent, whilst the ball is in play, the goalkeeper should concede a penalty.
As simple as "your" principle may be that is not the letter of the law though, is it.
Taken from the FA Rules (http://www.thefa.com/football-rules...laws/football-11-11/law-14---the-penalty-kick) :
"A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits a direct free kick offence inside their penalty area or off the field as part of play as outlined in Laws 12 and 13."
Law 12 and 13:

Stonewall penalty and there would have been NOTHING harsh about giving it.
So if he had punched Ottamendi in the face and run away laughing it would still not be a penalty because Otter would not have got the ball ?
but if the ball came off the bar for instance otta would be in no position to react as hes been wrestled to the floor.pen all day longThanks for the links. Maybe, I don't recollect penalties given in similar instances where the foul is away from the ball in play.
