I remember a very mixed response to the national anthem from City fans before both the 1981 Cup Final matches against Spurs. The country was torn apart at the time under the Thatcher government and there was a strong anti-establishment feeling from most football fans. The Brixton riots had happened a few weeks earlier and a couple of months later Moss Side and Toxteth erupted. To be honest this country feels like it is heading the same way at the moment. To be fair I'm a "Republic" advocate. The singing of the national anthem was half hearted at best in our stadium so I'm probably not alone in my apathy for people born to rule.
