Message from a Sunderland fan

Remember in the 90s playing Sunderland last game of the season when we sent them down (think it was 3-2 and an amazing game). Brilliant atmosphere, loads of Sunderland fans in the Kippax that day which i wasn't used to as a kid but not a hint of trouble. Remember how good the Sunderland fans interacted with the City fans that day in what could of easily got very nasty and always stuck with me.
I was there and was amazed how they took going down with us singing you'll be back, me and a few mates ended up on the piss with loads of sunderland fans round manchester after the game great set of fans

We got on the wrong tube to Wembley when we played Sunderland in the final, full of Sunderland fans.
We thought we'd get our heads stoved in but they were safe, good fans.
Was in the Kippax when we played Sunderland and they were relegated. The Kippax was absolutely awash with Sunderland fans and no trouble with any of them despite being relegated. They were also one of the few sides at Wembley (for the league cup) where a large group of fans stayed to watch the trophy presentation. Utmost respect for their fans.

To be honest I am finding it a bit strange. It feels like watching some sort of movie. Watching us move up in quality since we clambered out of the third division has been incredible. The gap from the Championship to the PL was huge, then we made a huge leap forward into the top six. It was so tough to get in the top four and then win something. Then struggled to get out of CL groups and this season we have won10 out of 11 CL games, a record for the competition.
But the biggest change of all has been under Pep's Total Football. I never thought I would ever see a City side (or any English one TBH) play at such a high technical level. It has become as the ironic song says: "Just like watching Brazil."
Wednesday night's performance was, for me at least, the best i've ever seen from a City side.
The second half had all the skills, dynamism, accuracy, movement and control that we've been treated to all season so it wasn't a big surprise to see the boys passing PSG to death.
What stood out for me happened iin the first half. We statrted off decently, albeit a bit to 'timid' for my liking and then PSG clicked. They began to batter us and i thought we were gonna crumble. When you see De Bruyne, Rodders and Bernardo chasing shadows for ten minutes it doesn't look to rosey.
But no, they didn't buckle or lose faith. They stepped up and it was every last one of them doing the hard, dirty stuff without the ball. We had captains all over the pitch getting stuck in, breaking PSG's rythmn and cajoling teammates. It kept us in the game.
We now know we not only have a team of fantastic footballers, we also have a team of real battlers, determined to win for the team and supporters.
Up the fucking Blues.

edit can a nice MOD move this to the post-match thread ta.

I was in the Kippax that day, they brought loads.

Remember our coach getting bricked before a game a rocker park. Hellen the bell was on our coach and give them a good telling off. We couldn't see the game due to the Fog. We were singing 1,2,3,4,5, nil to the man City as we couldn't see the pitch from behind the goal. We lost the game but happy memories.

Blue to my bones , but love Sunderland because of there fans. Brilliant at Maine Road when they where relegated and again at Wembley. Top reaction to City winning the league when they played Utd. Top people the Mackems, I hope they back in the prem again and FTM .

I'm sure we were the first team to play them at the stadium of light in 1997. Group of us went, had a good chat with a few fans in the boozer beforehand. Fuck me could have done with a translator though, couldn't understand a word!! :)

For many reasons I, like many other blues, have got a proper soft spot for Sunderland, be it because of their reaction v united when Aguero scored, or the great sportsmanship of the fans at the league Cup Final, or the documentary with the haunting theme music, and how they just remind you so much of a late 1990's City.
Every year they seem to screw up; a few weeks ago they were embroiled in a three scrap for automatic promotion from League 1, but my heart sank the other night when I checked the final scores and saw that they had lost at home to Blackpool, for they are now doing their very best to not even make the play-offs!
Their many fantastic supporters deserve so much better

you daft sod, they **** understand you either ;-)

Got a similar one on Thursday morning from my Huddersfield Town supporting mate,

"The level of football, total football played by Manchester City is something you don't see that often..... UTB"

Watching City the other night is like watching a different sport to my lot at Sunderland. I hope the long term Maine Road lot are lapping it up.
Oh aye pal, loving it!

The dream was there when we were where you are now, just like you lot, we stuck by them and we are being rewarded! Let’s hope the same happens for Sunderland one day. Never stop dreaming, never stop that great support you lot have for your club.

You lot and West Ham are my favourite sets of fans in the country, outside City. You were sound when you brought that massive tribe of you down to Maine Road in 1991 (sorry for relegating you!), I was only a kid but seeing a City fans swap a scarf with a Sunderland fans and everyone shaking hands and wishing each other well sticks with you when you’re a kid. And you were sound down at Wembley in 2014, I went down the for weekend and spent the Saturday night out round London with Mackems, with not a hint of mither all weekend.

Apologies for that Super League bollocks last week, hope you don’t think we’re all cunts for it... it wasn’t out fault! Haha

We will never forget Sunderland fans for their fine work on this day...

I hear a lot of 'we know where we came from' and frequent references to the third division but let's not forget that was the only season in our entire 127 year history that we were down that far. We may have fallen on hard times in the 80s, 90s and 00s but that wasn't our level historically and lets be proud of that (as well as proud of the support we showed during the dark times).

Hopefully Sunderland's blip will also be short lived and good luck to them.
Quite right!

City were always one of the bigger clubs in this country. Always up there in the Top 6 of the all time League table, most seasons in the top flight, attendances, Top 10 for trophies, and #1 for record crowds.

Where we were in 1998-99 was a complete anomaly. Even the period from 1983-2003 was an anomaly compared to the rest of our 127 year history.
