Manchester City Linked With Stunning £103m Bid For Barcelona Star Lionel Messi

by Rob Kearsey July 21st, 2013

Messi could leave Barcelona at some point in the next few years if the club don’t win any trophies.

Manchester City could be ready to make a stunning £103 million bid for Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi, with several other European clubs considering a bid at some point in the future, Le10 sport reports.

Paris St Germain, AS Monaco and Anzhi Makhachkala could all join City in trying to sign the attacker, who is regarded as one of the best players of all time following his exploits at Barcelona.

Messi has been accused of tax evasion in Spain and could consider a move abroad if he continues to be charged by the Spanish authorities.

City would be one of the few clubs in the world that could afford to pay the enormous transfer fee for Messi and also the players wages.

However, big spending French clubs PSG and Monaco would also join City in any race to sign Messi.

The attacker may not come on the market this summer but should Barcelona not win any trophies for a few seasons, the Argentine attacker may choose to play for another club, if Barcelona are happy with him leaving.

PSG’s president Nassar Al-Khelaifi recently threatened Barcelona with a move for Messi, saying he would activate the players buy-out if Barca continue to track Thiago Silva.

Evidently the journalists playing random transfer darts hit the bullseye this time and decided to print their wild ass guess speculation.

Thought bollocks after the first sentence - why the fuck would Barca not win any trophies for a few seasons and then went to reference Monaco as though they would win more than Barca -

Utter shite

Deadline day bid 100m, how exciting would that be?
200m is his buyout.

I can't see anybody getting him for under 150m and 500k a week wages.

500k a week is roughly what we have saved on our wage bill with the recent departures
He's actually on wages of around £250k a week. The rest is things like image rights and product endorsements.

Cant see it happening - if Cavani is 63 Ronaldo is 80 then Messi will easily clear 100M - just not going to happen at those numbers
I'm not saying this is going to happen, but the financials certainly wouldn't be a problem for this deal.

It would easily be covered by increased sponsorship (both in terms of value and number of companies), increased shirt sales, increased corporate sales etc etc.

Messi would pay for himself almost immediately in a way that someone like Cavani couldn't even get close to, even at a fraction of the price.

Can someone quantify this though.

The last revenue league table had Barca £160m ahead of us per year. Their television deal dwarfs ours by around £80m or something daft because of how the money is distributed. So taking tv out of the equation there is £80m difference. With or without Messi they are historically a bigger club and will attract bigger shirt deals and sponsor deals plus they have a ground not far off doubt the size.

I know Messi is the best player in the world but if people think your revenue would go up exponentially after signing him I think you would be wrong. Are there any examples of a team signing a star player and the revenue going through the roof as a result? Remember we are nearly getting top end sponsor deals and the like as it is. How much do we make per shirt sold when Nike have already agreed a lump sum?

Id also question the image rights subject as whereever he goes he will negotiate a bigger slice of that pie himself.

No chance of this happening unless Barcelona well and truly collapse this season. Knowing Messi, he loves the club too much and would still want to stay and fight. If anything, it would be very sad for whatever reason to see him leave the club.
Unmitigated twaddle

How do you work that out?

So whats you value of the best player in the world if the second best was valued at and bought for 80 Million some years ago.

Whilst ultimately the price is determined by what other clubs are prepared to pay if PSG are prepared to pay 56M for Cavani, Chelski 50M for Torres then clarly Messi would be valued more. Messi's buy out fucking clause is greater than the GDP of some countries.

How much would you value Messi if you were the Barca prssie?
No I agree with your valuation. I asked how you thought it wouldn't happen for those numbers? City would pay whatever.

Madrid made the £80m back on Ronaldo within two seasons through new sponsorshir and shirt sales. Buying Messi would be unprecedented and City would pay whatever, and with a smile.

-- Mon Jul 22, 2013 10:54 am --
