Metrolink to / from Etihad

Always thought it would be worth building a giants terminus turntable as a new centrepiece for Piccadilly Gardens?

A bit like how a driveway terminus works for a car?

Could easily have trams waiting like rolling stock on each branch of it.

Perhaps trams terminating at Piccadilly and just heading back to Etihad on matchday a lot quicker would solve lots of issues.

If anyone has visited the Falkirk Wheel, they can appreciate engineering solutions which are also iconic.

That, or can we just nuke Piccadilly Gardens, anyhow?
Once took a school trip to go on the Falkirk wheel, 5hrs to get there on the coach! And when we got there Closed due to high winds
: (
Amazing engineering though.

Have you been and tried the Anderton Boat Lift at Northwich? That is a wonderful piece of Victorian engineering.

Instead of nuking it, please can we have our old gardens back.

Add a couple of platforms at Picc Gardens and alternate trams could be shuttles and trams to other places.

I was in Scotland for a few days about nine or ten years ago and went to Falkirk just to see the wheel. The bloody thing wasn't working due to hydraulic problems.

I guess it didn’t look as inviting in winter.

Sadly there’s no real need for a park there. It’s too small an area and it’s the de facto centre of the city due to the trams and buses. It’s got too many people passing through and trying to be a place of peace and relaxation is at complete odds with that.

I actually would combine PG tram stop with the Market Street one, at least three platforms and just surround it with open space and places to get a coffee/snack.

Yes I agree it was just wishful thinking on my part, the area is smaller as you pointed out due to modern high rises being erected on the site.

But there is no denying that it is a bloody awful part of the city and that bloody concrete monstrosity of a wall is still there. Burnham should pull his finger out and get some top city planner to redesign it.

Wasn’t that wall designed by a “top city planner” in the first place :0!

Tadao Ando was his name. (Probably still is)!

The City didn’t have to build it though did they? Just like they didn’t need to spend a small fortune on the “Pebble” outside the Bridgewater Hall.

Its City of Manchester not the responsibility of the Mayor of Greater Manchester however an iconic modern transport exchange would be something he could be involved in as he is responsible for the GM transport

Exactly. The gardens are surrounded by grade II listed buildings. That monstrosity at the southern end should be removed as well. The decision to block natural sunlight from that direction was criminal.

The worst piece of public real estate I have ever seen :-(

Complete rebuild and redesign was announced a few weeks ago.

Anyone know what the building next to Debenhams with the clock was?. Has Guinness written on it, was this a pub?
I think it was just advertising. Guinness had the idea of Guinness Time in the 30s to 50s and paired their billboards with clocks and there’s quite a few photo examples from around the country.

I don’t think these were usually on pubs. There’s another photo I saw on Flickr that showed this building clearer, with the billboard and clock but it looked just like a department store. In fact it seemed to have a For Sale or To Let sign on one of the windows so it might have been empty.
