Metrolink to the stadium

I rarely use the Met these days, used to a lot when I was younger. But you mention about how slow they are; are they slower than they used to be?because I remember them being pretty rapid in the 1990s but I got on one home after a night out one Saturday morning and it seemed slow as fuck.

Depends what line your getting I think, but as an example Altrincham to Piccadily has slowed down because of the relatively new South Manchester line connecting at Trafford Bar.

I'd rather add on 5 mins to my journey than crash into a South Manchester Met joining the line.

you'd have to pay me a large sum of money to use such a crap mode of transport like the Metrolink

I used it on the last day of the season against West Ham - never again - it was bedlam - thought I was going to miss the start of the match...

Cheers. It was the Alty line. I always remember the speed they'd pick up between Dane Road and Stretford when I was a kid, it seemed snails pace last time I went on it compared.

Good point about the other lines, must have a fair impact in each other now.

Be great if the Sheikh came in and Invested the money into the Underground system in Manchester.

What you say?

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.theguardian.com/uk/the-northerner/2012/mar/14/manchester-localgovernment-underground-trains-picc-vic-secret-telephone-exchange" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theguardian.com/uk/the-north ... e-exchange</a>

Be awesome if this was actually introduced and we had our own Tube system :-D

Aye, it infuriated me at first because I didn't realise it was happening when the tram stopped between Old Trafford *spits* and Trafford Bar. But then a decent driver informed passengers what was going on, so I've learnt to add it on to my journey.

I too remember the days when the'd whiz between Dane Road and Stretford. I'm just guessing but, I think the drivers have been told to slow down between that link to reduce the impact it has on the rail line.

I believe the reason for the slow speed betwwen Dane Road and Stretford is because of the new trams.

They were modified for the Metrolink by raising them up from the boggies to be at the correct hight for the platforms which are in the main old railway station ones.

They were designed for street level platforms in European cities and the manufacturer told Metrolink that they would need special dampers to combat swaying a high speeds.

Metrolink declined to buy the dampers because of the cost and now any high speed running on long stretches of track leads to violent swaying of the carriages.

On the south Manchester line to Altrincham this can happen between Warwick Road (refuse to use the new name) and Stretford, between Stretford and Dane Road and also between Brooklands and Timperley. If you have never experienced it I can tell you it is quite scary.

Thanks!

When they laid a new track on the Altrincham line a few years back their reason for it sounded a bit bollocks. You're reason makes sense.

Slow?

Expensive?

I don't use it often. I hired a van this week and dropped it off in Oldham. Went to the station across the road, via a pub when I found one, and there was a tram in 2 minutes. I put my destination in and tried to feed coins just as the tram arrived but something was stuck. Anyway I got on and for the first time got a free ride. Wouldn't do it out of choice but it was Oldham, I had worked like a dog all day, I was in a tee shirt and it was freezing!!

Anyway the line from Oldham to Hollinwood is painfully slow, full of twists and turns that the tram takes almost at walking pace and even into town further on it slows for one track and hills.

However, the line to Altrincham is rapid. Not done Didsbury yet.

But quicker than a bus?

I used it for most games last season and to be fair mate, that's the worst it's ever been. I've gotten into Picadilly 25 minutes before kick off and made it in before which impressed me.

I have my Metrolink matchday season ticket, and guess what...

With it being a bank holiday, the trams stop running almost immediately after the final whistle on the first home game of the season, so I won't even be able to use it to get home.

Agenda

I believe missing one or two games is enough to wipe out the saving of having a Metrolink season ticket, so I'll be half way there without missing a match.

I'll have to blag my way onto a bus with it.

Don't use the bus but I could have cycled quicker as I can going to work in town. I suspect the tram would win on on the Altrincham line though. I like the Metrolink but it is not without fault and you seem so defensive I suspect you work for them. Faster more reliable transport is what we need. Unfortunately I need my car for work most days otherwise I would mix it up with tram and cycling.

Last tram from Etihad 22:13 match will finish at 21:55 so only 18 minutes to get the tram.

If the pens are full for the trip back to town are they going to abandon passengers after 22:13?

If you are going to Altrincham they recommend getting the connection at St. Peters Square, last tram 22:46.

Surely they could extend the service slightly if a match day falls on a Bank Holiday, or is that too much to ask?

METROSTINK

Quicker walking than queuing to get back, the Leeds game would have put off many.
