The guy can be sacked. He's basically bringing the clubs name into disrepute by his actions. I doubt there would be a term in his contract for this but there would be an implied term.
The only thing the club would need to show is that they offered to help him in someway as it is common knowledge the guy has a problem. If they have, then he doesn't have a prayer in the employment courts.
