Re: city make milner bid (SSN)

I sincerely hope for everyone's sakes this doesn't turn into another lescott, no squabbling, no double talk (i.e. everton's effectively saying, we're not selling at any price, but keep the offers coming and you might tempt us), city shouldn't say anything in public, milner shouldn't have to make a request.... city should make another bid, if that's rejected, discuss it with villa in private and see what the situation is.

that rather depends on what they say in private, doesn't it! if they are interested in doing a deal then you don't walk away, you work it out with as least fuss as possible. we should be so lucky.

the factors that turned the lescott deal into a horrendous saga were that city got conflicting answers behind the scenes, even in public Moyes was saying 'not for sale at any price' out of one side of his mouth, then 'it would take 30m' out of the other...and MH made it all worse by failing to play a straight bat with the press. what worries me this time is that O'neill and :erner don't seem to be communicating that well...

I'm surprised City made the bid public, yes it sends a strong signal to Milner, but it could also politicise the whole thing for Villa... and anyway, coming in with a bid 20% under the expected price kind of fudges the issue we are supposedly sending Milner (yes we want you but we're not sure we want you that much). I dunno. Because of the Lescott deal, I worry... but on the other hand, I've been led to believe that deal was almost done very quickly, before Everton changed tack completely and started playing hard ball... maybe Villa will think the extra 2-4m Everton got effectively cost them the start to the season and eventually, European football, but this time we're months away from pre-season... Villa were very professional and straightforward over the Barry deal, but his leaving had been settled with a gentleman's agreement with o'neill.

here's my prediction. another bid of 22m is rejected in public... clubs talk privately and end up doing a deal for cash plus players. some people won't like me saying this but I reckon Ireland and Richards could well move the other way.... 10-12m for Ireland, around 8m for Richards? 2-6m plus those two, or 10-14m + Ireland, would be my guess. He might take Ned I suppose, he loves his big strapping young england Centre-Halves.... but he had about 5 the last time I counted, he'll probably think that's enough.

It doesn't matter if we pay £100m for him. Some people don't seem to understand the whole 'money no object' thing.
You sir need to extract your head from out of your ass. Of course money is an object. The Sheikhs' companies over here are presently facing massive debts and their citizens enduring significant cut-backs because of the economic recession. They will be watching their purse strings closely and will not be taken for a ride, especially by rival clubs who can then strengthen their own squads at our expense. We will not be paying more than 27.5 million for Milner.

Move on. There are just as good if not better players for 20-25m than Milner. Don't be played like fools, City.

name 'em. name the two footed players who can play anywhere in the midfield, who are totally at ease on the ball, and who have that sort of energy and workrate.... seriously, I'm struggling! his only weakness of any sort is that his passing isn't up to the standards of a lampard or gerrard, but they don't have his versatility.

Is this something we should be worried about? The debt his companies have I mean. How does it effect him, and our club in the short/long term?

Re: city make milner bid (SSN)

Has anybody worked out which cryptic clue or song referred to the potential signing of Milner?

Would be really interesting if anyone had sussed it out!

Not really. The point is that while in football terms our budget seems unlimited, Mansour and Khaldoon are not just going to throw money away for the sake of it. Yes we accept there will be an Oil/City premium of sorts but there is definitely a point where we would stop when it comes to signing a player. So comments like "it doesn't matter if we pay £100m for him" are ill-conceived. Notwithstanding the effect it has on the values of other players we are in for.

Re: city make milner bid (SSN)

I hope we will not even make another bid, Christ 20m for Milner is already a fucking joke.
