Missing woman Nicola Bulley - inquest (P 158)

It's a really strange case, in that there doesn't seem to be many things that could have happen, but all of them seem very odd. It's most likely that she fell in the river and drowned sadly. It seems odd that she did, but these things do happen unfortunately.

There was a potential route out of the area, unseen by CCTV but in broad daylight you'd be surprised she just left her phone and dog and went with someone under duress. She could have gone with someone she knew, but again, you'd imagine she'd take her phone and dog.

Maybe she was having some mental health problems and wanted to escape, so left her phone and dog and disappeared of her own accord. I find that very strange though. Wouldn't you leave your dog at home in that case? Wouldn't you take the kids to school and then just go? You wouldn't be thinking logically but I doubt you'd join a work call and then decide to do it.

It's a baffling case. The very experienced diver with the top of the range equipment has said he's never been involved in one like it and if she was in the river he's certain he'd have found her by now.

The phone left on the bench suggests she left suddenly, or if somebody abducted her they made her leave it there as people know you can be tracked by your phone signal. Leaving the phone, unless forced to do so, suggests a sudden panic to make her rush off and leave it as the situation at that moment took precedent over everything else. The dog falling into the water would be one instance but that has been discounted as it was dry. As has the tennis ball theory as I believe she didn't take it. The other possibility is somebody she knew and trusted suddenly shouted to her to come quickly. If said in a state of panic it would make her jump up and forget the phone and everything else to rush off to follow them fearing the worst. I believe there were obstacles and gates in the area that could have prevented the dog following her and returning home. That explains why it remained there in an agitated state. It couldn't follow her and she didn't come back.

Sadly unless she has effected her own disappearance I fear a tragic outcome as I guess everyone else does.

Definitely a strange case

People say the waters there are slow moving but apparently it’s 18ft deep. So even waters that deep can look calm on top but have a strong undercurrent.

With no sign of her anywhere and it being near the river, the logical guess would be that she somehow ended up in the water and just hasn’t been found yet for whatever reason, but these diving experts know much more than us and don’t seem to think so as it stands.

If she'd 'done one' I'd have thought she'd have chucked her phone into the water to cause confusion, mind you there's plenty of confusion anyway.
The phone being left where it was has meant that the first week of the search has been focussed on a specific area, and encouraged the idea that she has fallen into the river, which is exactly what you would want if you were trying to disappear.

An important caveat to bear in mind here; that diving company is private. They wont want to not find her quickly, its a business. And yes Ive read that they are doing this for free but it is national publicity nonetheless. This means if they dont find her quickly then that head of the company will put out theories as to why as he is doing, and respectfully to him he shouldnt because investigating isnt his job, it is the detectives job and they wont be briefing him on what they have learned and done beyond what they have put in the public domain, ie they have looked at her personal life, worklife, friends, tracked movements, gone through the phone work and all manner of stuff. Just an important thing to be aware of, for what its worth

I agree he appears to be acting out of his remit giving press conferences and putting forward his theories. He's there to search the river end of.

I don't think he is. He is there , with Lanc Police blessing to determine whether there is a body in the water or not. He will have been fully briefed as to what info he can say to the press

Having been involved in a number of searches for missing persons I can say with certainty that bodies in the water eventually float to the surface unless they are weighted.

Could it be she’s in the water but her entry point is much further away than they’re assuming because her phone location?
